iphone frozen at start up

i restarted my iphone 3g and when i went to start it up again it froze at the apple. it seems to keep trying to start itself the screen goes blank the apple comes up for a little then behind the apple the loading symbol comes up and thats when it stops...what do i do?

iphone 3g, iPhone OS 3.1.2

i have tryed this already from other forums i been reading. here is what happen see if that helps
i shut it off to restart because i havent in awhile...ive been told to do this.
i went to turn it back on, the silver apple logo comes up sits there for a lil then out of no where the loading circle comes up (looks like a circle with a bunch of lines and spins around in circles) the second that starts it freezes up.
a min or two after it shuts itself off and trys it again, the battery is now dead from that.

I am having the exact same issues, it wont even read on itunes.
