How to remove ping from itunes (Version10)

Until Apple provide a checkbox, there is only one way to remove Ping from the sidebar in iTunes 10 (so far as I know).

Enter the iTunes preferences, go to Parental, disable the Store. Ping goes (and so does the store).

If you want to access the store in the future then you can by re-enabling it.

Apple, if you are listening, why oh why do you add something to the sidebar without a way of removing it? For people who don't want Ping all you have done is force the stuff they do use (playlists) further down the page.

As UI specialists, you really should know better!!!

as a bonus, not having the store visible means you won't have the temptation to buy stuff you don't need. If enough people disable the store, maybe, just maybe, Apple will give a checkbox to remove ping (just like they do for radio, podcasts, tv etc).

Hope this helps others.

Folks,

I think it is great to get on the discussion boards about this, but I also think the best thing to do is use the Support from within iTunes. It will link to a webpage where you can e-mail Apple. We should let them know we would like an option to turn off the Ping button but still have access to the store. So write to them via e-mail after you post your dissatisfaction on the message board.

From within iTunes 10, click on your username (from the Store's front page) in the upper right hand corner of the window. Enter your password to view your Account settings. Midway down the page is an option that appears to allow you to turn off Ping. Although I have not tried it yet, I assume it will shut Ping off without turning off your access to the Store.

Assuming this actually works, I must say that others on the discussion boards are bashing Apple for not allowing a way to turn Ping off (FrustratedUser2010, you are not one of these people but I felt I needed to state this somewhere. This post seemed like a good place. No disrespect intended.) Everyone keeps going to the Preferences and saying to shut off the Store from within Parental Controls. That's pretty shortsighted. The purpose for the Store is to have access to its content. That's what make iTunes so great. Check your account settings, turn off Ping, and stop whining at Apple.

Now, if it doesn't turn Ping off, retract all I said above.

I too would like the ability to remove Ping from the sidebar.
If I have it turned off and never use it I don't expect to see it in the sidebar all the time!

It seems the best way to get Apple to listen to our opinions is a combination of submitting feedback, frequently posting about it on forums and discussions such as this one (Apple appear to be going through posts and deleting any with negative comments), using hashtags on twitter, commenting on facebook and youtube etc, all of which would help it up the search on Google (Apple won't like that).
I wonder what the 4chan community makes of it all.

By the way, I am an Apple fan but this update doesn't seem very well thought out. Maybe they didn't beta test it long enough. It has numerous faults with the iPhone 4 even, something you'd expect to work without problems.

Notice they're still not accepting feedback on iTunes 10.

Also, it gets really tiresome how every post on these forums is replied to with "don't tell us, go use the feedback form". Sometimes it's good to know how other people feel, and talk about stuff with other people, rather than just submit things into the black hole of Feedback. What's the point of having forums, anyway?

And I've never seen any evidence that the Feedback form does anything other than discard anything you enter there, unread.

Just submit it. Version number is not really of much consequence. You're message will get though.

Steve talks about hearing from users during his keynotes all the time.

The reverting of the functioning of the Green resize button in iTunes 9 is an example of a change due to user feedback.

frustrateduser...you put it perfectly...i made a ping account just to see what it was and it's one of the dumbest things i've ever seen so i got rid of it. and i'm really ocd about my itunes and need it organized just the way i want it and not having the option to remove just ping from the sidebar and still keep the store is really annoying. but i assume at some point they will eventually have that option. apple is really dumb at times...
