Mac Pro 12-core and Radeon 5870 - Display goes all static at random times

Hello

My new 12-core Mac is FAST! I love it.

Sometimes - at random times - the display goes to static. It looks a lot like old TV static did on UHF and VHF channels (remember those?). The picture just goes bad and does not get better unless I restart.

I don't know if it's a software or hardware issue. I'm using the Radeon 5870 attached to a 30" display. No other monitors or screens are attached.

Any ideas here?

Thanks,

Steve,

I am a new Mac Pro 12-Core owner, and while I am enjoying my Mac I am experiencing an issue similar to yours.

Every know and then my computer screen will go into a jumbled mesh of random colors boxes, and shapes. Except unlike your need to restart the computer when the problem arrises, mine only lasts for a fraction of a second, and then returns to a normal.

The problem is however that these little screen flashes are becoming more prominent. Which gives me the feeling that our video cards might be in their graves soon. 😟

I wanted to chime in on this thread, it's been a while since I have posted here.

Long story short - my case got escalated to apple corporate and they basically said they can't support third party displays and have decided to not proceed in fixing this issue.

The official response from engineering was that this only affects certain LCD panels (most of which are very very popular panels from even Apple's own pre-LED displays). The hilarity of it all is that the problem doesn't persist on any other Apple certified graphics card other than the 5770/5870 series. I personally purchased all previously supported graphics cards for Mac pro's and determined this only happens (reliably) on the latest series graphics cards. I offered to go to Cupertino Campus and give a demonstration. They declined.

I bit the bullet after nearly 8 months of frustration and bought a few remaining 30" ACD's (refurbed) since apple informed me they would replace the LCD panels in them if they had the problem. They don't have the problem becuase they were refurbed with modern panels that don't reflect the issue.

Apple wouldn't tell me what panels have the issue and which ones don't (certain panel revisions apparrently show this issue vs older revisions) so I couldn't ask Dell to replace with a specific panel to alleviae the problem. Dell says they were using the latest parts available for the replacements).

Bottom Line - the 5770/5870 cards (and/or drivers) have problems with nearly every type of 30" LCD panel and Apple won't support the issue unless you have Apple displays.

Apple corporate tried to boil it down to a, in my opinion, failed parallel example: Just as Apple can't provide support for every third party printer that you can buy - Apple can't support every 3rd party display you might buy. The problem here is that displays of this type don't have any driver requirements to function properly and adhere to strict specifications to work interchangably with a display interface (such as DVI or MiniDisplay Port etc.)

Too many people are having problems for this to be ignored, however, the population of people using new mac pro's with older (OLDER!? more than 6 months old !) 30" displays is a small population and Apple is copping out of fixing the issue becuase it may, in fact, be the hardware of the cards themselves (which spells costly for apple). Engineers confirmed that there is a powercylcing issue with these cards and said LCD panels that likely is causing the problem.

Trust me - this was the short story. And it sucked.

If you have any specific questions I'd be willing to answer them in this thread.

Thanks!

PS. a little bird told me that this problem is silently acknowledged internally but becuase it's such a small population that it isn't worth the time/money to fix it likely will never be addressed.

I have a 2010 MacPro with Radeon 5870, and have been experiencing intermittent snow on 30" Dell (3007WFP 2560x1600) dual-link DVI. I had a Bravia 42 running off the mini plug with an Apple HDMI adapter and after upgrading to a Bravia 55, the graphics card started behaving badly- not recognizing the second monitor at all, and frequent snow on the main. I researched the issue and replaced cables, etc. without improving the situation.

I pulled out the card to examine and clean the contacts, and sure enough, there was tiny speck of some yellow plastic material firmly stuck on one of the contacts in the computer (not on the card) which I dislodged with a toothpick and a sable brush. Reinstalling the card, the Bravia recognized and no snow since. I have been a field tech, and it's amazing how many hardware problems can be fixed simply by removing and reinstalling the device.

This may not fix everyone's problem, but this system was a factory custom-build and came this way, so there could be some packaging residue or environmental debris in common with your installation. On this particular system, removing the retaining strip and fan to remove the card is about a 10-minute job including a thorough vacuuming before reinstalling.

Spacecadetcraig: That's a great reply, thanks for posting.

You got the same "answers" that I got. I have been sleeping and waking my screen to alleviate the issue for about a year now, and I hate it. I'll be upgrading my display soon anyway, so this issue will go away, but I hate that Apple is not willing to do their part to fix the issue. I spent about $9000 of my own cash for this machine, and it should work well. At least, better than this.

I hear that the Mac Pro will be phased out soon in favor of a pizza-box type of machine with thunderbolt for expansion. We shall see what the future holds for Mac Pro.

Looks like Radeon has finally done something.

Got the card replaced at the end of October...

After 2 replacement 5870s this last one works with my 30" cinema display.

I'be been cutting on AVID 5.5.2 and it's working fine.

Using after effects and it's fine.

none of the previous issues are present except for wome weird syncing patterns upon waking up but I won't mention that because it's just a waking up thing (shhhhh!!)

I got a new card months ago from the Apple Store, it was my 3rd ATI Radeon 5870.

I've had it connected to my 30" cinema display via the DVI port and it's fine but recently I needed a bit more length so I'm now using the Apple MiniDVI to DVI with usb cable and all the problems have come back.

the weird monitor sync screen glitches when it wakes up and now massive amounts of noise over 100% black in the aperture slide show window and in Final Cut Pro empty video monitor windows.

... If apple wants to give me a $1200 display to replace my cinema display as a solution then great. Otherwise as soon as the new boxes come out I'm taking this lemon and card #3 in for permanent replacement.

My graphics colleague and I are having the exact same issues.

2 NEC MultiSync PA301W (30") monitors

Mac Pro (Mid 2010) (5,1)

2 x 2.93 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon

ATI Radeon HD 5870

OS X Lion 10.7.3

We were using the Apple Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter (MB571Z/A) for the last 6 months but we just recently purchased the Kanex C30 Mini DisplayPort to DVI (http://www.kanexlive.com/c30). It didn't help. It's been going on since day one. It's not just Dell monitors.

We have two identical set-ups and we both have the same problem. The displays go "all static" when they are woken up from sleep. We have also encountered a problem that no signal is sent to the display (mostly the second display), but the computer still sees the desktop as dual monitors. Only shutting down and restarting seems to clear it - but not always.

We're now going to contact Apple over this issue.

Was chatting with apple representative and she told me the card I needed for my setup was the radeon 5770 card. 2 weeks ago I purchased the card for my MacPro 1,1 with Apple 30 inch display and 90% of the time it shows me the lines and flickering all over. Has a solution been found for this issue or should I just return the card, and stick with my orignal Nvidia cards? I cut run new programs like (Final Cut X) with these old cards though 😟

Hello,

Same prob here, MP2010, 6core, ati 5770, HP2475w Displays. Tested with apple minidisplayport to dual link dvi adapters. Static pixels. OSX 10.6.8.1.1

I heard something about "EDID Manager", small boxes with two DVI connectors, in and out. They store the EDID from your monitor and clone this info in direction to your Mac. If you disconnect your monitor from the EDID manager your Mac won't recognized this.

Can someone test this? I don't got an EDID tool right now...looking on eBay for a gefen dvi detective or Lindy EDID Manager..

Excuse my broken English.

I have a Mac Pro 1,1 with a 5870. I use a 40" Samsung LED Tv as my monitor, and I occasionally have the exact same issues, Static when you wake from sleep, and a line that appears randomly near the lower part of my TV. Given that this specific combination of parts is not officially sactioned by apple. I figure there isnt much anyone can do for me, but it does indeed seem like this is a problem with the 5870 itself.

I have a MacPro5,1 - 2,66 Ghz 6-Core - Lion 10.7.3 - with the Radeon 5870 card and am also experiencing the static problems. I have a 27" Apple LED Cinema Display (2560 x 1440) on one of the Mini Display ports (runs fine) and my 30" Apple Cinema Display (2560 x 1600) on the DVI port. When purchasing the new MacPro my supplier said nothing about any problems involved with my set-up plans. I talked with Apple Support here in Germany - and they acted like they had not heard of the problem. I suggested taking a look at this forum. I have Apple Care and I am going to bother Apple until they do something... How can they market a MacPro that won't function with one of their own 3-year old displays? Sure - the driver might need some fixes with new releases - but this problem has been out there for some time.
