Q: tracks in same album split into different "albums"

currently, I have a couple of different individual albums split into different albums.

examples: one track of Desertshore by Nico (which has only one disc) "belongs" to a different album, according to iTunes. (it also has a slightly different automatically retrieved album cover.) similarly, +The Madcap Laughs+ (which also has just one disc) by Syd Barrett has gotten split up into two albums. (again, with slightly different album covers.) other albums have the same problem.

I have tried going to Get Data and methodically making sure that the data matches and it still doesn't work. I have tried deleting all the info about individual tracks and still iTunes remembers the metadata. maddening! what can I do about this?

note that I have tried using iTunes 10's feature where you can edit all information in an album at once. a good feature, but it can't merge albums. manually dragging and dropping in and out of folders also does help, of course.

2.4 GHZ MacBook, Mac OS X (10.6.4), using iTunes 10

I'm sure it's covered in turingtest2's link, but make sure that the Album Artist field (not to be confused with Artist field) has the exact same info for all tracks.

Hi Ricky, which album are you having trouble with? Can you paste a screenshot? Have you looked at this section and at this example? The article is necessarily generic, but I might be able to suggest specific steps if I know the issue you are trying to resolve.

It's for iTunes 8, but it worked for me, so hopefully it'll work for you too.

I had the same problem..  Really easy to solve (now that I know...)

Select the songs you want on the same album, right click, click the first line about informations (sorry I use itunes in french) then say yes about changing information for many songs, then go to the tab called ''option'' .  2 things to do:  First: click compilation,  Second: change ''no'' for ''yes''.  That's it!    You will need to put an album name in the ''infos'' tab only if this don't work right away.

Hope it will work as quickly for you.

Try right clicking each individual song and GET INFO.  Go to INFO.  Each song probably has a track number designated.  Delete the track numbers and they'll all go under 1 album.

This problem usually occurs when you download different tracks and not an entire cd.

You can't drag tracks into order in the main Music playlist. If you want to fix the problem of multiple covers read this article.

I also found another alternative take "http://samsoft.org.uk/iTunes/grouping.asp" suggetion and change ios5 settings. Go to setting/music/ and turn group by artist in ablum off.. Either that or change all to compilation

Hi there, yes making everything into a compilation can fix multiple covers for some users, for some albums, some of the time. Which is fine if you don't mind treating your non-compilation albums as compilations, and don't have any other issues.

For a thorough overview of the potential problems and workarounds for each please read the whole article I wrote, linked to earlier, and which you have rediscovered.

Except I Just tested this solution about using music setting ios5 group album by artist and it doesnt work. May be bug or need to play with it some more. Back to checking off all for compilation

You tested a solution for what problem?

Turning off "Group By Album Artist" is a solution for those who would rather have all artists listed in the iOS device's artists menu, even those who only appear as guests or on compilation albums, regardless of any other side effects such as multiple covers in other views.

If you have a specific issue of your own I'll be happy to advise on the best approach.

In the meantime I realise I failed to respond to this query earlier:

Right now doing song by song as havent figured out how to mark entire album as compilation

You may well have worked this out by now, but if not you can select multiple tracks using combinations of shift-click and ctrl-click to select ranges or toggle the selection of individual items, then access the Get Info. dialog (CTRL-I) and edit common properties. Part of a compilation appears on the Options tab.
