how to use airplay ?

I claim to be no expert in this field but I think you'll find that this function is not enabled unless you have an additional service connected to your network.

In my set up I have my mac upstairs with my source itunes. In the living room I have an "airport express" next to the hifi connected via an audio jack. The airport is configured with my home wifi network to "enable airtunes". With this connection to the network an icon appears next to the genius icon in the bottom right hand corner of the itunes window. From here you can select which part of your network you wish to direct music.

I do not believe that itunes allows you to stream music peer to peer but you can enable sharing which allows you to search another persons itunes library and listen to their music subject to them granting you permission.

Airplay and Airtunes are different. Airplay is basically the replacement to Airtunes, but also enables video streaming and will be built into the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch, as well as the Apple TV.

Basically you can stream for any iDevice (or computer) to a Airplay device.

I'm sort of confused about this as well though... I have a iPhone running 4.2 (should have Airplay) but I can't seem to figure out how to find the button to choose where to stream. (on iPhone, iPad, or iTunes).

Does anyone know whether you need the apple TV or a Airplay specific device on your wifi network for the airplay option to appear on your devices?

I haven't been able to find the airplay button on my iphone 4.
