iTunes 10 displays incorrect free space for iPod touch (2G)

iTunes 10 is displaying erratically changing values for available free space on my iPod touch 2G. iTunes 9 did not have this issue.

What's the best way of accurately determining free space on my attached iPod touch?

For a workaround, I just subtract an additional 0.5 GB from the free space amount.

As a side irritation, I don't understand why GB was enforced as the de facto measurement unit for all situations. It should change to MB for measurement below 1 GB (re: Finder). Case in point: I have "0.01" GB of photos on my iPod touch (I would have more, but the built-in camera isn't working 🙂 ).
