Help! What replacement adapter can I use for iBook G4?

Today, my power cord arced and frayed and blew up on me. It was awesome. Until I realized I would no longer be able to use my iBook!

I need to buy a new one but I find that it is very confusing figuring out which kind to buy!

My original power cord looks like this http://www.amazon.com/adapter-power-Apple-Powerbook-1-875A/dp/B0015GPMO2/ref=sr1_fkmr22?ie=UTF8&qid=1283485450&sr=8-2-fkmr2

But the one Apple tells me to buy looks like this http://store.apple.com/us/product/M8943LL/A

Not to mention a slight variance in pricing!

My old power adapter says it handles 46W. But most of the power adapters I find on Amazon.com say 45W or 65W.... is there any real difference or danger or do I need to buy a specific one?

Thank you, oh kind and loving and wise Apple guardians.

Hello,

I know what you mean. I'm always looking for a good quality iBook charger that doesn't cost a fortune. I'm sure that the Apple Store item is of high quality, but this is that last one that I purchased

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013OF8LS/ref=oss_product

And it has been working great. It looks like an original Apple charger has good, thick but supple quality cords. It's very nice to have the charge light, too, as this one does. That visual clue to know your Book is charged without having to wake it. I use this with both my G3 and G4 iBooks.

Thank you! I checked it out and it looks great! But I am wondering... if it is okay to use that power adapter that says 65W with my iBook (that says 46W on the cord) couldn't I just get one of these cheaper ones that look a tad older but says 48W too? Like this one... http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-Power-Supply-Apple-A1036/dp/B002V17R6Q/ref=sr14?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1283485516&sr=1-4

That one looks exactly like my old one and is mucho cheaper!

What do you think, oh wise and generous replier to whom I am eternally grateful for thy respondage!

You giveth me too much credit. I'm just a just another student in the world of Macs.

I'm open for correction here, but from what I understand, the 45W and the 65W chargers are both approved for the iBook G3s and G4s and are plug compatible. Someone recently posted information about the 45W chargers, saying they are a bit underpowered for the 14" iBooks. I haven't noticed a problem with using the 45W charger on my 14" books.

I did read somewhere that there have been incompatibility issues with some of the many third party chargers that are available out there. I do have one of the cheap ones like the one you asked about and it seems to charge just fine, although I noticed that it runs at a higher temperature (feels hot!) than the Apple charges I own. The Apple chargers may have higher refined charging electronics that could lend itself to better battery life, but that's just a guess.

I'm sure there is someone on Apple Discussions that knows more than I about these subjects. Can anyone provide some additional insight?

Hi all,
I generally use the 45W and the 65W interchangeably and since I always have a working battery in I can't see where it makes much difference. Iactually prefer using the type that look like this:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0013OF8LS/ref=oss_product
Mostly to get the LED charge light, which I find very helpful diagnostically.
I noticed that it runs at a higher temperature (feels hot!) than the Apple charges I own.

Which is hard to do since those chargers run very hot. In fact it's a bad idea to ever cover them with anything when they're running. (Done that! "Is something burning?")
I used to buy them from China on eBay but recently it seems like the same items ship from the US. I also only deal with sellers with a 99%+ positive feedback rating.
