I contacted AppleCare and they said its locked to Vodafone UK, but unforunately i dont know its phone number since I brought it through eBay. So, any cheap websites that does the unlocking using the IMEI number, I saw many sellers in eBay unlocking vodafone UK iphones.

They do not unlock they hack to remove the lock

http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3743Next time you update iOS it will lock back to Vodafone

If you are in UK get a PAYG sim establish yourself as a customer by using

and then request an official unlock

The official way is more easier and cheaper. Just get your iphone back on vodafone for a month and get it unlocked.

Can anyone tell that my iphone 3g of model num MB631C is factory unlocked or not???

Try reading the thread before you ask.

The model number is NOT a reliable indicator of whether or not the phone is locked.

The only thing we can glean from that is that it originated in Canada.

    Hi Nick!

    IMEI 012538009019238

and also how to get it unlocked? It was bought as a no contract phone!

    Thanks!

Try actually reading this thread or serching the forums. This question has been answered hundreds of times.

ONLY the carrier it is locked to can unlock it.  If you're in the US, that means AT&T. Contact them.

You can check the lock status and other information of an iPhone (perhaps phones sold in any country or perhaps only US sold iPhones) at http://iphoneoperatorcheck.com/. In place of the IMEI you can enter the serial number and get the same information. My experience is that the information provided is very accurate. One caveat is that for a phone that was sold that was originally locked to a carrier but later unlocked through the carrier, the lock status doesn't appear to be accurate until the phone is activated with Apple. If you have an AT&T iPhone and have it unlocked through AT&T, it won't show as unlocked until you connect the phone to iTunes and update the carrier settings. The status on the preceeding web site appears to be real time. I had an AT&T iPhone which I had unlocked through AT&T, checked the status and it showed locked to AT&T, updated the carrier settings in iTunes and received the "Congragulations, your iPhone has been unlocked", then checked the lock status again and it was changed to unlocked. Also, if you do a restore, it appears that the status will change back to 'locked" until you update the carrier settings again in iTunes.

    Now a couple of comments on previous postings;

    - AT&T, Verizon and Sprint all sell iPhones in the US and AT&T and Verizon will unlock phones sold through them under certain conditions.

    - Contrary to some earlier comments regarding AT&T unlock requirements, you do not need to be a current or former AT&T wireless customer. The only requirement is that the contract under which the phone was purchased was completed satisfactorily per the contract terms.

    - Apple also sells full price phones which are unlocked.

    - Contrary to earlier posts, there is nothing in the serial number which indicates whether the phone is locked or unlocked.

    - A prepaid monthly contract has 15% less in taxes compared to a post paid monthly contract. The free/low price subsidized phones sold by the carriers with a contract are terrible deals. Over a 2 year contract you will pay up to $1,200 more in montly service fees to save $500 on the price of the phone.

    - An option to the high monthly fees is to buy a used iPhone on eBay and get a pre-paid monthly contract ($45 plus sales tax for everything for 30 days) on Straight Talk which uses AT&T's cell network.

So, where is a list of factory unlocked models? I've read the whole thead! What a waste of time! Apple, where is the list I wonder?

  • KiltedTim Level 9 (50,278 points)

There is no list of factory unlocked models. Model numbers are not a reliable indicator of whether an iPhone is unlocked.  The only possible exception would be the ability to identify phones originating in countries where locking is either illegal, and all phones are sold unlocked (India, for example) or where none of the carriers offer unlocking and unlocked phones are not sole (e.g. Japan).
