Music suddenly starts playing on its own

I have a iPhone 4 (32GB) running 4.0.2 and over the past week or two I have noticed that once in a while whatever music I have currently paused on my phone will just start to play. In fact it just happened again now. The iPhone was just sitting on my desk next to me in sleep mode and the music just suddenly started to play on it. It happened a few days ago as well when I was walking around a store with the phone in the side holster I have. I have tried rebooting the phone (even a hard reboot). Is there some app that might be causing this? Many times it has happened the iPhone is in sleep mode (screen locked) so it isn't as if me touching it in some way would do that. It happened again today when I ran the Weather Channel app on the iPhone the iPod started to play. Very strange.

I've had this happen to me many times as well. I noticed that when music is playing and I open some apps, they stop the music. Afterward, if I open an app that uses sound, it will play the music automatically by itself. I can reproduce it every time with 2 certain apps, so must be some sort of bug. Hopefully they fix it in the upcoming update (4.1)

Well as it happens I installed the iOS 4.1 GM last night on my iPhone 4 and twice since music has started playing by itself. Once when I started the Facebook app the music that was paused on my iPod started to play and another time when I was in another app. So I don't think iOS 4.1 will fix this. I wonder if some app is doing it?

You should post in the developers forums (assuming you obtained the 4.1 software from Apple and not a torrent site where you could get who knows what added to your phone).

i WENT THROUGH THIS WITH APPLE AND THEIR SOLUTION WAS TO RESTORE THE IPHONE
I DID THIS WITH THE TECH ON THE LANDLINE PROVIDING GUIDANCE.
i DID NOT WORK. AT LEAST TWICE A DAY IT HAPPENS. i DO NOT HAVE ANY HEADPHONESW PLUGGED IN. i HAVE BLUE TOOTH HEARING AIDS AND I AM VERY AWARE OOF THESE OCCUIRRENCES SINCE THE MUSIC IS ROUTED INTO MY EARS VIA BLUETOOTH.
IF IT CONTINUES THE APPLECARE PERSON SAID TO TAKE THE PHONE TO THE STORE AND GET A NEW ONE. BOTTOM LINS IS THEY DO NOT HAVE AN ANSWER FOR THIS PROBLEM.

I have experienced a similar issue.
After investigating the matter, I believe that in my case, this might be caused by accidental pressure on the mic of the headphones. Indeed there is a hidden button in the mic, 1 pressure on it starts the ipod app and starts/pauses playing music.
Anyone knows how to reconfigure or neutralize the hidden button of the mic ?

In my case this happens when I do not have headphones plugged in. I can have the iPhone 4 laying on the table, locked with the screen off and it will start to play music. Or when I have it in its holster or even in a dock charging it will suddenly start to play music. Sometimes I will be using it and open up an application like say Facebook and whatever is paused will start to play. I noticed that sometimes the location services icon will appear the exact moment the music starts to play.

I have a similar issue! My music will sometimes randomly play, especially when my headphones are in. Siri will sometimes randomly come on too, without me doing anything. Like if I'm on YouTube for example, sometimes my music will just come one and interrupt it or Siri will. My iPhone 4S is not even a year old yet! Also sometimes the music will pause itself or play super fast, like skipping somewhat. I thought all of this might have happened because sometimes I loose grip of my phone and the headphones get pulled out while playing music but I don't know if that's the cause. Also, could it be because its been dropped? I have a case so I didn't think that was the reason...they weren't too bad of drops either....

Wow. I almost forgot about this thread until I was notified that there was a new post. I was the original creator of this thread back in 2010. Back when I had this issue in 2010 I had an iPhone 4. As I recall it might have been a software bug or an App that was causing it because after I deleted the app it no longer happened (an iOS update might have fixed the issue as well). I never used the Apple headphones with the mic/button on them (no headphones were plugged in when it started to play music so that wasn't the cause). In any case it hasn't happened since, but of course that was 2 iPhones ago for me. I bought an iPhone 4S in 2011 (which never had that problem) and now I own a iPhone 5s (running iOS 8.4) and thankfully it never has had the problem.

This happens to me also. I have an iPhone 6+ running IOS 9.2.1(13D15)

When I make a phone call, talk and then end the call, Apple Music starts up automatically after the call ends, and plays a random song from my iTunes library.

If I hit the home button twice to find and close the Apple Music app, its not opened so I can't swipe it to close it.

I actually have to find the apple music icon on my screen, click it, launch apple music, and then swipe to close apple music to end the song.

It won't happen again until I answer or make another phone call and hang up.

The common factor is that this behavior ONLY happens when I have a Bluetooth earpiece paired and actively connected to the phone via Bluetooth.

Since I use a Bluetooth earpiece for all my phone calls, this always problem happens. I tried using several different Bluetooth earpieces and the problem of the music starting after a call is ended is consistent regardless of which brand and type of Bluetooth earpiece is use.

If I disconnect and power off my Bluetooth earpiece and use the phone's built in speaker for calls, the problem doesn't happen.

Very strange. I wish Apple will release some kind of hotfix for this. The strange thing is that once it happens if I hit the home button twice to find and close the Apple Music app, its not opened so I can't swipe it to close it.
