The mail application doesn't connect to websites to get mail so regardless of connecting via http or https, it shouldn't make a difference.
It uses Mail protocols that have been in place for quite a few years. The iPhone uses IMAP/POP for its basic mail function.
What error do you get when attempting to add the account via gmail?
You can access a Gmail account as an IMAP account, a POP account, or as an Exchange account via ActiveSync which also provides for syncing Google contacts and calendar events over the air with your iPhone.
When creating the account with the iPhone's Mail app using the Gmail account preset, the account is created as an IMAP account automatically with the required settings for the account provided by Gmail.
You can check Google's/Gmail website for the various options and their recommended settings for creating and accessing the account with the iPhone's Mail app.
Help me out here, gmail uses https by default, you have to actually turn it off to use http:
To disable or re-enable this feature in Gmail:
1. Sign in to Gmail.
2. Click Settings at the top of any Gmail page.
3. Set 'Browser Connection' to 'Don't use https' or 'Always use https.'
4. Click Save Changes.
5. Manually change the URL to http://mail.google.com to start accessing Gmail via http.
When I try adding my gmail account onto the iphone via the Mail application "The IMAP server "imap.gmail.com" is not responding. Check your network conncetion and that you entered the correct information in the "Incoming Mail Server" field. *Where is the incoming Mail Server field I only see outgoing ?
