Ipod Touch, iTunes 10 sync problem

I updated iTunes today to version 10 and while I was at it, thought I should backup my iPod Touch. During the backup/sync process, there was a problem and iTunes displayed an error message saying that this iPod can't be synced!

I tried the sync again but got the same message. Then I downloaded and reinstalled iTunes 10. Now when I connect my iPod it detects it as a new one, asking me to restore from my last backup (about 1 month ago) or set it up as a new iPod.

I could just restore it from that backup, but that is not ideal as i'd loose data for my apps generated since that backup (which is a pain) and i've purchased music from the mobile itunes store, which has not been transferred to my mac.

Details:
Mac OSX 10.6.4
iTunes 10.0 (67)
iPod Touch 3rd Generation, 32GB model
iOS 4.0.2 (8A400)

Is there any way to either:
1) Get iTunes to sync with the iPod properly
2) Transfer my purchased music off before doing a restore

Any help would be appreciated!

In addition to the above, I've since discovered that:
1) All my apps that were downloaded from the app store (i.e. not the default ones) don't work. They just crash out to the home screen almost immediately when launched. All the default apps such as contacts, mail and safari are fine.
2) The music app still contains all my music, which appears to be working fine.
3) The ipod shows up in iPhoto, asking if I wish to import the photos in my camera roll.

Same problem as all of you, but I haven't been able to sync my photos except once. Now there is only black when I click on any picture folder. Error message states unable to find appropriate file, as though something is missing or is not allowing me to sync photos. What could be wrong? Could I have deleted a needed Apple file that makes this function work? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Same problem here. I upgraded to Itunes 10 over the weekend. Last night I decided it was time to update the itouch to the 4.0 era. I let it run overnight as I new it had to wipe the data and resync. The resync should have taken hours. I woke up in the morning to find all of my apps are there but none of the music. I am off to work with no music. It is good to know it is not the itouch though.
