Q: "unable to check for available downloads. The iTunes store is temporarily..

I rented a movie from iTunes yesterday and have been unable to download the movie. It says that it is "unable to check for available downloads. The iTunes store is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later." I know that a lot of people on other sites have reported having the same problem. I though that by downloading iTunes 10 the problem would be fixed but it is still not downloading. Does anyone know any solutions?!

I sure hope they're doing something to fix the problem - it's ridiculous to expect users to call them up every time the iTunes Store fails. I'm astounded that such a major ecommerce site could be so unstable.

I thought I would try out iTunes and download a Freakonomics to watch on Sunday evening. I purchased Freakonomics and Apple billed me right away. A moment later, when it came time to download, I got the message, "Unable to check for available downloads. The iTunes store is temporarily unavailable." When I checked these support forums, I discovered that this problem won't go away until I call Apple and tell them to "release the download queue", whatever that means. I couldn't find a phone number for the iTunes store, so I called the general Apple support line, 1-800-676-2775. The person told me she couldn't help me but to go online to www.apple.com/support/itunes/ and I could chat with someone who could help me. I was only able to send an email describing the problem. Apples response was, "You will receive an answer to your question in 48 hours." So now I wait.

I have the same problem and will give Apple Care a call since I paid for 3 years service.

I am having the same problems- starting with a problem unrelated but tied to iTunes 10 where if you're watching a video that's downloading and go to another application such as mail and then return, the controls (play/pause etc) are no longer responsive - you have to relaunch the video. Shortly after I began to get the dreaded "unable to check for available downloads" message.

I've had a series of interactions with the iTunes store people where they credit me back and clear the queue. The problem is, though, that the problem happens all over again if you are unable to finish a download and need to resume at a later time.

I never had iTunes issues before upgrading to iTunes 10 though. I'm surprised that this issue has been out there for quite a while with no resolution in sight.
