iTunes 10 and Visualizer

I don't know that a lot of people use it, but the visualizer is all messed up with the iTunes 10 upgrade. A little history. I have a mac mini hooked up to the TV in the living room. I use it to listen to music through the AV system all the time. I don't like having the screen saver come on, and then have the screen go to sleep, so I usually turn on the visualizer. It's cool to have on in the background, and is a nice conversation piece. 🙂

Up until yesterday, when I upgraded to 10, the visualizer would keep the screen active, preventing the screen saver, and sleep mode from kicking in. This is no longer the case in 10. It will allow the screen saver to come on, and move the visualizer from full screen back to the iTunes window... and then the screen will go to sleep.

There are so many things I dislike about this upgrade... Anyone else have this same issue? Any ideas on a fix for this one?

Sorry, no answer. I have the same problem. I love my Vizualizer and just let it play on full screen endlessly, adapting itself to each random tune played.
What has happened? It reverts to screensaver. I re-enter password and Viz returns in a small screen and I have to go to menu and select "list "to clear the Viz.

Previously, to close the Viz, all I had to do was single-click anywhere.

You have stuffed up, Apple. Please fix this and we will all be happy.

Simples.

It may not be an answer, but it is possible they changed this behavior to plug a security hole. Also, to make the OS more green.

Yes, I read all the posts and I understand what you are trying to do. I would simply state that the mode you described would bypass any power management settings and security settings that where in place.

At home, connected to a TV this might not seem important. In a place of business however, it might well be.

I can not say for certain that was the reason for the change, but it does seem plausible given the nature of the change.

I'm having the same issue since upgrading to iTunes 10 on my 2006 MacBook. Additionally, I can hear the hard drive powering up while iTunes is running and it's heating up my power cord near the part that plugs into the computer enough to melt away the plastic and expose the wires underneath. A more complex issue with iTunes, perhaps? Hope it gets solved soon!

I agree that removing this visualizer feature (iTunes Visualizer keeps screen active) has created a bug. A typical use is to play iTunes for an extended time. Previously, to prevent the screen from going to sleep and requiring me to login again when I wanted to change Playlist I would simply turn on Viz. This would block my power and security settings from taking over and I understood that. Life was good. With the upgrade, I cannot block these power and security settings when I wish to play iTunes for an extended time and have interrupted access to the iTunes app (i.e. not have to login again.) The next best option I have is to disable the power and security settings thereby making my account less green and less secure.

I expect this was an intended change by Apple to improve green and security. However, Apple should reconsider. A primary use case (for me at least) is now broken. My only workaround is to disable the green and security features Apple was trying to shore up.

Apple - How about an option in Advanced Settings (or poke in a plist) to restore Viz as pre-empting power and security settings?

As regards to your visualiser being small in the bottom left hand corner, after messing about a bit if i put the visualiser on while using anything but my main music playlist (say...itunes dj) I have the same problem as you, yet if I play itunes dj, then select music in the playlist menu then select visualiser it works fine.
Hope this sorts you out! 🙂

I have the opposite problem. I've never used the visualizer, and I don't like it or want it.

With iTunes 10, when the iTunes window has the focus the list tends to disappear when the song starts and is replaced by a blank screen with a set of stereo-style controls at the bottom. It looks like a visualizer screen without the visualizer.

If the iTunes window has focus, and I force the screensaver on with a hot corner, screen saver is turned off periodically. Since I have the screensaver prompt for a password, this typically results in the password dialog showing up and staying on the screen forever, defeating the purpose of a screensaver. LCDs get burn in too.
