iTunes 10 Auto Fill Free Space Results in "Over Capacity" Warning.

In iTunes 9 when i had "Automatically fill free space with songs" checked, it would fill my iPhone to about 100MB or so short of full. Very full, but enough space left to be able to download some apps or maybe some music directly to my phone.

In iTunes 10, clicking the very same option results in iTunes telling me that my phone will now be 0.34GB Over Capacity. I tried to do things like unsync large video files, but nothing seems to work. If i unclick "Auto fill" I have 9GB empty, but as soon as i put it back on it jumps over the limit.

Anyone else having this problem?

I phoned Apple Support and the solution is very simple. In fact I feel quite stupid having worked on macs for 10 years.

When you connect the iPhone/iPod go to the summary tab of the device. Click on manage music manually and then press Apply before going to the music option under the device on the left-hand side. This will bring back the Auto-fill functionality.

I hope this solves for all...

I had the same problem. I kept trying to get iTunes to Auto-Fill - up to the AVAILABLE capacity.
It kept refusing because of "Over Capacity"
I tried the Summary - Manual - Apply which the previous poster suggested over and over and it still wouldn't Auto-Fill.

Finally this is the solution that worked for me:
1) Set iTunes to manually manage music and apply
2) Select ALL the music on your device (in my case iPhone) and DELETE it
3) Make the Auto-Fill settings you want and sync

you'll get a dialog box which says that there isn't enough space AND it asks if you want iTunes to randomly select the songs to sync.
This dialog box did not appear in all my other attempts to Auto-Fill!!!

When you agree - it starts to Auto-Fill your music up to the maximum available space.

Try it and see if it works for you.

None of the above solutions worked for me, I'm constantly 0.31gb over capacity whenever I try to auto-fill. Every single time, just like kylefox's. I've tried restores, everything, and nothing works. Can someone offer anything else to try? I've had bugs such as this with every mobile Apple device I've owned, and would like at least one of them to be fixable, so I can stop coveting everyone else's Android phones and can free myself of my increasing disillusionment with Apple! 😉

I encounter this frequently when adding/changing movies on my iPhone.

*I simply uncheck 'automatically fill free space with songs', sync it.*

*Then re-check 'automatically fill free space with songs' and sync again.*

iTunes appears to need this done to recalculate how many songs will fit each time content changes on the device. If my iTunes has filled 22Gb of free space with songs on the last sync and I then add a 2Gb movie, iTunes still tries to cram 22Gb of music on the now 20Gb free space in the next sync. The above action works for me every time 🙂

Hi, had similar problem on iPad.

Overcame this by setting manual sync on the summary page as mentioned by John Ruffel previously.

then created a smart play list (File menu or ctrl Alt N) with the following rule:

'Size' 'is greater than' '1' MB

Limit to (check box) 12 GB selected by random Note change to suit your device capacity

Save

Give the smart play list a sensible name.

Select it to check there is some music in it.

If you are happy then drag it to your device, which should then sync automatically.

It worked for me, good luck.

Here is the step-by-step to make sure you get to the window with the settings you need.

  1. In iTunes with your device connected, click the name of your device under "Devices".
  2. Click the "Summary" tab on the top of the screen (in the main pane).
  3. In the "Options" area (in the main pane), make sure the checkbox next to "Manually manage music and videos" is ticked.
  4. Make sure your device is expanded in the left pane by clicking the triangle next to the device name.
  5. Click "Music" in the left pane under the device name (not the "Music" tab at the top of the screen in the main pane).
  6. Below the songlist on the left, there is a dropdown list labeled "Autofill From:". Select the source you want.
  7. Below the songlist on the right, there is a button labeled "Settings ...". Click it.
  8. There is a slider allowing you to specify "Reserve space for disk use". Select the desired amount of free space.

Note that these settings prevent you from using the sync feature of iTunes with that device and you will have to manually select the music and videos henceforth by dragging and dropping instead of using the nice selection interface in the tabs selected in the top of the main pane.
