iPhone4 dying no reason?

Hi,

Just this morning my wife's iPhone4 completely died, it would not respond to any touches such as the hold or home button, nor would it respond to any USB or wall outlet charge it was just a black screen. Finally, we decided to reset it via (Home + Hold Button for 10 secs), and it turned on and rebooted. We also discovered that it had 60% battery life still so it wasn't a dead battery issue. Why would the iPhone4 do this? It's only less than a month in use, and she had it on sleep mode before we went to bed.

Is this a recurring issue for others, if so is there a way to fix it? Could it be hardware issues?

My wife remembers reading or hearing somewhere that if you put 2 iPhone4s next to each other issues will start to develop, could this have been the issue? My phone was fine this morning though.

Please let us know of any suggestions or answers.

I had an issue like this a month or so ago. It only happened once and never has happened again. I simply chalked it up to a software issue or some sort. Since it only happened once I've not really thought about it since.

If you've never reset it before it was probably just time and memory fragmentation. You should turn it off or reset it periodically, like once a week.

You may be right. We reseted the phone, and we haven't had a problem the rest of the day. Just still a bit taken aback that a phone less than a month old is having issues like that. Wish there was a more finite answer to it.

I'll keep that in mind, I figure it's not like a regular phone that we should just leave on all day and all year. It's practically a small lap top. I appreciate the input.

Glad I did a quick search on line this morning. My iphone4 is just a couple of months old and just died on me yesterday evening. Same symptoms as you described. Thought I was in for a protracted problem but the re boot you described worked. I suppose as suggested on this discussion that now and again I should "rest" the phone now and again - it has not been off since I got it.

Had exactly the same problem just now - Sat there looking at it for the first twenty minutes thinking... Hmmmm what now?! Your advice on here about holding the home and top button for ten seconds worked a treat. Thank you to everyone who contributed 🙂

Yeah, it's a computer. Computers crash sometimes. Even Apple computers. Rebooting is the answer. Even had to reboot my MBA this morning because it was getting flakey, after only 16 days since the last reboot. Of course, my previous XP laptop had to be rebooted daily 🙂

Crap happens, luckily it is a quick fix. It also gives an opportunity for non-iphone users to heckle you if you get stuck waiting while you reset your iPhone. I think I've had all my iPhones die momentarily so it is not just an iPhone 4 thing.

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS POST. I was sitting there on my phone for 30 minutes. As soon as I put it down it "died" out of nowhere. I thought the power died or it needed more charge so I was just waiting for 20 minutes. Then, when nothing happened I decided to look this problem up and found these posts! SO HELPFUL. It worked and now I'm back in business!!!

Thank you for this - my iphone 4 died this evening and was exactly as you describe. Before arranging to take it back to the shop tomorrow, I did a google on the problem and found this thread.

I did as you said and everything is now fine.

Thank you so much for telling us about holding down the home and hold buttons for 10 secs. Had exactly the same issue and, with the phone just out of warranty, I was panicing! But your post and guidance sorted it immediately. THANK YOU!

Thank you so much for telling the technique of holding down the home and hold buttons for 10 secs. We had the exact the same issue just minutes ago. I have only turned off the phone once since I got it a few months ago and going forward will turn it off weekly to reboot.

This post is old but i hope i can help. For those who have warranty i do not RECOMMEND this. This is what I did....

I opened up my iphone 4, removed the screw that was holding down the battery cable, popped the battery cable out, then connected it back in.. And wah la... It works again! I hope this helped you guys 🙂
