Itunes 10 installation problem with ipodservice.exe

I have an issue with the installation of itunes 10: I get an error saying that Ipodservice.exe couldn't start (Windows application error). Itunes starts ok but then I can synch my photos (itunes 10 freezes). I tried de-installing all my apple products, restarting windows and then reinstalling itunes 10: still have the same error message and the same issue. Does someone have an idea on how to make this work ? It was working perfectly when I was under itunes 9...

having similar problem related to the ipodservice service (ahem) on Win Xp SP3. In this case iTunes 10 install FAILs ans will not complete. FWIW, this is a system that has been smoothly upgraded from iTunes 4, 5 on up thru latest version of 9. Now trying to move up to 10. Files download fine but during install process get an error about writing memory in regard to ipodservice.exe.

Exact error msg: The instruction at "0x7c91b21a" referenced memory at "0x676e6984". the memory could not be "written".

After 5 identical error messages, install will then fail with an error stating that iTunes install ould not continue as iTunes needs QuickTime. This is not helpful as I have QT Pro for Win installed - the most recent version before the version released with iTunes 10. Apple software update app does not offer a separate QT install - it is bundled with the iTunes install kit.

If I go into services, I see the iPodService running. After the error occurs, the service is disabled. If I try to restart it, it says the service is flagged for deletion.

I've also tried manually downloading the MSI's from the Apple Software Update app and running them manually - same errors.

Not sure what else to try, have rebooted, shut down all non-essential apps, cannot get this bugger upgraded to the build of 10 that is out there as of 9/4/10. Any ideas on what else to try? Happy to debug - let me know! For now I am stuck on Itunes 9...

Thanks,
L

I had the same problem with Win XP using my laptop. iTunes 9 was working perfectly fine and the upgrade to 10 fails at the end of the install. I deleted/installed iTunes 4 times and still had the same problem.
If you click "ignore" it finishes installing. Then I went in to C:\Program Files\iPod\bin to rename the iPodservice.exe to iPodService.exe.noload, then created a "notepad text document" that I renamed to iPodService.exe so Apple will not try to install the service again. iTunes now loads without errors and loads faster than iTunes 9. iTunes seems to recognize my iPhone when I plug it in... I don't know what that service is really for.

Apple does not apparently care about this issue.

We've been discussing it since the v10 release, see this earlier thread...

PS - Renaming files or reverting back to iTunes 9 ipodservice.exe is not a FIX, it's a workaround. Apple needs to step up and fix their buggy, bloated software.

dear digitaldaze.
Thanks for such quick reponse.
I wish could say I was surprised by your reponse.
But I am not: I've 'been here before' with other issues with itune,
and yes, they just don't care.

What a missed marketing opportunity!
It continues to bewilder me that this potential 'killer app'
for music / video sales revenue which is allready such a tgood earner for Apple should be so neglected. DUMB!

Seems as if reverting to Itunes 9 is the only thing to do to get workable verison.
But old install files are hard to find, unless as I usually do, I keep a few old versions in the archives for exactly this reason. (Didn't do that this time - learnt that lesson again!)
But it Did find v 92. link below.
I have installed it and got Itunes back - and Ipod service is fine
Good luck!

Geoffrey

Hi,
I also have the same problem. I had the same problem when installin 9.2 in my laptop and I followed the applesupport knowledgebase and had to remove quite a few things and reinstall.

In my desktop, I am having the same problem when insatlling and I don't want to do that song and dance everytime .

Though I said " don't install", when I restart tunes I get two popups. One saying that "can't delete ipod service" and another about artwork ....that I have to reinstall.

I have a question:

When I open "Add/Remove Programs in Control panel, I see:
1)iPod for Windows 2006-01-10
2)iTunes.
iPod for Windows one conatains the ipodservice.exe.

Can I remove that program?

I deleted these temp file C:\Documents and Settings\<UserName>\Local Settings\Temp
for every User in my PC. The I started my broken 9.2 iTunes. I clicked on "Check for updates". It showed version 10 is available and I updated it and it worked.

Coming to think of it, when I first tried to update when my 9.2 was working , it showed I have the latest version. I went to the Apple site and downloaded from there and I got all sorts of error.

May be we are just supposed to update from iTunes.

My iTunes10 now works.

OK Apple, who every tested this application before its release needs to be sent on a quality control course. Seriously, come on!!!

I am also receiving the dreaded iPodService.exe application error. All was working perfectly with my previous version if iTunes and now I am all buggered up.

Normally you can expect good stuff from Apple. 😟

Down grading to a previous version is not a "FIX" or even a very good work around. It means we will not be able to take advantage of any of the new iTunes 10 features.

1. Uninstall iTunes 10
2. Install iTunes 9.2.1
3. After the install, copy the "C:\Program Files\iPod" folder to an alternate location.
4. Uninstall iTunes 9.2.1
5. Install iTunes 10
6. When the error pops up during installation, overwrite C:\Program Files\iPod with the previously copied folder.
7. The install will complete successfully and iTunes 10 will run normally.
