why do my fonts look so bad on my new Mac Pro

Hi

I've been using a Macbook Pro for about a year now and am pretty happy with it. So when it was time to buy a new desktop I bought a honkin big Mac Pro. The only thing that I don't like about the new machine is the way it renders fonts. Pretty much all fonts look better on my Macbook Pro 13". On my Mac Pro the small fonts are especially annoying. The primary display on my Mac Pro is an NEC 2690 wuxi2. I've had this monitor for over a year now and never had any font problems under windows. And as a matter of fact when I run Windows on the Mac Pro in Fusion the same fonts look just fine.

Normally I would have just chalked this up to the differences in font rendering in OS X vs Windows. But my Macbook Pro fonts look just fine. My Appearance settings look to be the same on both computers. On the laptop its set to use LCD font smoothing and not to smooth fonts under size 4. I've tried pretty much all settings on the Mac Pro and it doesn't really help.

Is there anything I can do to make the fonts on my big machine look as nice as the do on my laptop under OS X?

Thanks, Derek

MacBook Pro 13", Mac OS X (10.6.1), 4GB RAM
