1.insert the Snow Leopard install DVD, open disk utility and select the whole DVD (model, not name) in disk utility.
2. go to File menu->new->disk image from the DVD. select CD/DVD master for format.
3. once the disk image is created, eject the install DVD and insert a blank DL DVD+R. drag the disk image to Disk utility, select it there and click "burn" in the toolbar.

If your Macbook Pro DVD drive can burn dual layer DVDs you can do it. Get a dual layer DVD-R (or +R). insert the install disk, open disk utility and select the install DVD there. then go to File menu->new->new disk image image from install DVD. in the popup set the format to DVD/CD master and press save. Once the disk image is saved on your hard drive eject the install DVD, insert a blank dual layer DVD-R (+R) and burn the disk image to it. After you are finished make sure that the disk works. *Dual layer DVDs are extremely finicky. You may have to go through several different brands and disks before you get a working copy.* A number of people on this board recommended *Verbatim DVD+R DL* as being quite good.
