How many Movies can NEW apple tv hold at a time?

It is disappointing there will be no Hard Disc on the new ATV. I am wondering how many Movies and TV shows can NEW apple tv hold at a time? coz I usually download 10 or more movies and shows at the same time.

Any ideas?

Ok since there is no hard drive and you only can stream movies, why would you ask if you can download 10 movies at a time?

Until we see the device we won't lnow for sure about this.

I'll explain.

It is instant streaming.

That's marketing hype I think for the rental aspect.

I think it'll be the same as the old device, it will start to download a rental until it determines that at current download rate it can start to play without interruption. So if you're on a very slow connection it may take a couple of hours to start, but on a fast connection it'll be seconds to minutes.

Now I may be wrong, but I strongly suspect that as on the old unit it will store the whole rental locally, to allow you to replay, navigate back/forth to rewatch chapters quickly WITHOUT repeat internet donwloads which would increase Apple and the user's bandwidth usage every time a section was viewed again.

The rumours suggested it may have up to 16GB solid state memory - if this is true, it's not much, but would allow potentially several film downloads stored on the device until you're ready to watch.

Why otherwise would you have up to 30 days to watch (24/48 hours once started) after clicking rent - either you pay for the rental and only start downloading when you want to start watching (why not just pay when you start watching?) or choosing rent starts the download process which you'll have 24/48 hours to watch once enough has come down the line to watch at that rate, or to be store temporarily until you're ready to wacth. This approach would also allow slow connection users to say place a rental in the morning which would be available when they got home from work rather than waiting 3 hours to start watching once they'd pressed rent in the evening.

If the AppleTV has 16GB solid state memory, it's not enough to sync a large amount of content, butwould be enoiugh to hold a couple of HD movies/TV shows, and potentially a dozen or more in SD.

Also for things like screensavers, maybe they'll allow syncing of user photos for custom screensavers effects.

All pure conjecture but as far rentals I'd be surprised if the whole movie did not download and then delete once the view period was up.

I think it will be downloaded into a rental area on iTunes and then streamed from there over the network, thus eliminating the need for internal memory altogether. But would definitely be cooler if it did have a certain amount of storage. 🙂

While that could work it would make it mandatory to have a computer running to rent anything on AppleTV, which would be silly, and would also beg the question why they wouldn't allow full purchases as they'd then go straight to iTunes for you (perhaps better than the previous reverse sync that wasn't always perfect).

Again, only time will tell...

The new tv will require enough storage for the OS to run and to buffer a full length movie with some overhead, indeed it will likely require a good deal more if any reasonable amount of M-JPEG content is to be buffered. It seems inconceivable to me that this would be achieved by volatile memory, so it's likely that this is achieved by solid state storage if their is no conventional drive on board.

cynicism ? what you AC 😉

At this moment in time, M-JPEG doesn't seem to have a great deal of use on the new tv, it appears to be an extension of the iPad formats which you have referred to. The purpose of M-JPEG on the iPad is of course to extend the support to more cameras which can be plugged into the iPad via the camera connection kit to include non MPEG-4 cameras.

I note the appearance of 3rd party airplay already, so it isn't inconceivable that we may see some camera manufacturers add airplay capability which would of course allow us to watch video immediately without cables or transferring to another device. Perhaps airplay may already allow you to plug your camera into the iPad and stream it to the new tv, who knows.

One. The new ATV will have 16GB of flash memory, which is sufficient for caching streaming content. Once cached data is viewed it's deleted from the cache, or replaced if you start streaming something different.

It remains to be seen if rental video will be available directly from the new ATV menu, but if it is, I suspect it will be available for streaming directly from the iTunes store until the rental period expires.

If it is the case that there is 16gb of flash memory in the atv then I think apps or extensions to the functionality of the device will be possible in the future - assuming there is also enough enough ram.

But there is no real proof until they are shipped and pulled apart - considering only the retail price and intended market, I think 4gb (at best 8gb) is more likely, just to manage and enable streaming.

16 GB is only a rumour at this stage, I tend to think it might be 16, but I'd be rather more cautious about stating it as a fact as has been done above.

I also tend to think (or certainly hope) rentals won't be deleted once viewed but might be wrong, it's something we'll need to wait and see. I don't believe anyone in this forums will know with any certainty.

If rentals needed to be redownloaded to watch them for a second or third time there's going to be a lot of users getting their service capped by their ISP's, many movies we rent get watched by each member of the family at different times, that could mean using up 10 GB of data transfer. Also if I fall asleep as I often do during a movie that might mean another chunk of data transfer and a long wait to redownload enough to be able to fast forward to the point I fell asleep.
