Blue screen of death fixes ?

when i'm syncing my ipad - the first thing it does is try to backup the ipad. It will run for a while and the BCOD appears. happens everytime. I bought and ran a registry cleaner because I read somewhere the 96% of problems are caused by the registry. I'm in the 4% group. Loaded itunes 10 - same result. If I restore the ipad to factory defaults - it works first time. next attempt then fails....
I tried different usb ports - same result, have a usb card on order with a VIA chipset set as I read this helps.. what else can I do short of returning the ipad. The ipad is a 65gb wi-fi only
