Best operating system for Imac G5 1.8 Ghz PowerPC

Being a computer illiterate zombie (keep reading, this isn't a wide-up) I have just been given a Imac G5 1.8 Ghz PowerPC 768 MB DDR SDRAM machine.

The present operating system is Mac OX X 10.3.9

Under the present set-up, which is the best operating system I can upgrade to?

What are the best 'machine' upgrades I can do (processor, hard drive, and RAM) to make the operating system upgrade better.

Thank you for any replies.

iMac G5, Mac OS X (10.3.x)

Welcome to Apple Discussions.

Your iMac G5 1.8 GHz will support either Tiger (10.4.11) or Leopard (OS X 10.5.8). The latest Mac OS is Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6.4) but you need a computer with an Intel processor to run it.

I would begin by upgrading RAM. Your computer will support up to 2 GB of 184-pin PC-3200 (400MHz) DDR SDRAM in 2 slots. That will give you plenty of juice to run either Tiger or Leopard. If you opt for Leopard you should keep in mind that Leopard takes up 9 GB of HDD capacity just for the OS. You also need to maintain a minimum of 15% of total disk capacity as contiguous free space. In any event, a HDD upgrade to a larger capacity HDD will improve performance of either Tiger or Leopard.

Please do post back if you have further questions/comments.
