Many thanks! (It's also useful to know that the link in the German version of that error message box is called "klicken Sie hier" ... I wish I'd known that a few days ago for a different topic.)

Could you generate another of the errors and click on the klicken Sie hier link, please? In the little box that comes up, what ModName and ModVer are being given for the error?

🙂 Thanks again.

The iTunes.dll result (on earlier versions of iTunes) often suggested user-account-specific trouble ... library files, preference files, content files.

I can't replicate this particular error on my XP system (granted, it's an English localisation rather than a German one) ... that has me wondering about issues relating to the cover art on the songs in your collection. (Effectively, that would be a content file problem.)

All my cover art is from the iTunes Store ... are you getting the errors when you're resizing "Store-sourced" cover art? Or is it only if it's using artwork you got from somewhere else (say, Amazon) and added to the songs manually?

hmmm, the majority of my cover art is for my CDs and was loaded from the internet.

I now tested with iTunes store songs, that I did not change in any way.

happens just the same, crashes in 100% of the tries, very consistent...

thanks for your help, it's appreciated, glad you do not have the issue.

I think the crash is related to the following:
when clicking the cover art in the lower left corner *of the song being played* then iTunes shows player controls when the mouse is hovered over the artwork window. when another song is selected for artwork display it cannot activate player controls and crashes as soon as the window is resized.

cheers,

Hah! I've been resizing the wrong thing. I take it back, Peter, I can replicate your issue in its entirety (XP SP3 English localisation). Same iTunes.dll being cited by my "iTunes has encountered an error" message when I click the "Click here" link in the error message.

Level 4 and 5 members here get access to a "Notable New Technical Issues" forum (in the Lounge), so I'll write this up over there (probably later on ... it's coming up for 2.30 am in New Zealand).

At your end of things, it's possible to make bug reports via the iTunes product feedback form:

http://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

But if you want to track a bug report, it's possible to sign up (for free) as an Apple developer:

http://developer.apple.com/programs/register/

... and then use the Apple Bug Reporter to submit the bug:

I got my Notable New Technical Issues post up ... but it's luck of the draw sometimes as to whether or not anyone relevant is watching that forum. So I think reporting the issue by multiple channels (by multiple people) is worth a try, Peter.

Is anyone out there on a Vista or Windows 7 system able to replicate this too?

🙂 I think the bug has been addressed in iTunes 10.0.1, Peter. Haven't installed it yet, but this showed up in the release notes (in Apple Software Update for Windows):

• Resolves an issue where iTunes may unexpectedly quit while interacting with album artwork viewed in a separate window.

Any improvement at your end of things?

shortly after sending the problem report I was contacted by Apple to submit a crash dump. seems as they addressed the issue quite rapidly.

Oh good! Jason contacted me in response to the post at "Notable new technical issues, too. I'd already collected DrWatson logs for the crash, but he also walked me through doing a ProcDump (which I hadn't done before).

Good lord but the ProcDump dump files are huge ... even zipped it was over 70 MB, if I'm recalling correctly.

🙂 many thanks for hanging in there and convincing me there was a reproducible problem.
