External monitor static when waking from sleep

I have a brand new MacBook Pro and purchased a mini-display port to DVI adapter (Apple branded). The adapter works well, except for an issue when my MacBook goes to sleep. When I wake it from sleep, my large monitor shows static. Sometimes this will resolve itself after a few seconds, and sometimes it wont (and I have to turn off the large monitor and turn it back on, which fixes the problem).

Any ideas on what might be the issue and how I might resolve it?

Thanks for the help.

I've had this issue again and again with my MacBook Pro 15" Late 2011. Did tons of research and found so many ideas on why it was doing this. It happens after the MacBook Pro has gone to sleep and then wakes up and very rarely after a restart. Usually a restart will fix the issue for a little while but inevitably the laptop will go to sleep and its back. First I thought my cable was bad so I bought the expensive Apple Branded cable and still no luck then thought it was due to heat as the laptop was a little too warm, bought a HiRise still no luck. I even tried other monitors, still no luck. I gave up for a while because I figured it was just a bad port on my MacBook, which it still might be, but I have finally found a way to make the flickering/static go away for months on end. Inevitably it still rears its head but at least I am not rebooting a few times a day any more. I found this web site which explains how to do a SMC reset and also claimed to solve my issue. I followed the instructions and to my surprise this actually fixed the issue.

I have new model mac mini 2010 and the probleme is exactly the same. If monitor go to sleep and I wake it up, it goes in a pink static some time for only two seconds, some time much more. I read other topics with mac pro, mac book, hdmi dvi adaptor, mini display port dvi adaptor and the probleme is always the same since january 2009 at least. I saw on the net that a lot of mac users have exactly this kind of probleme. It would be time Apple fixed this.

If all it takes to resolve the problem is turning the external monitor off and back on again, the problem is trivial and the solution is obvious: turn the monitor off before putting the Mac to sleep and turn it back on again after the machine wakes. In addition to avoiding the static, this will save energy.

It's sad to say it's at a point where I WISH that was the solution. Turning it off, unplugging it, pulling out the video cable. Before the update, yes, pulling the plug and plugging it back in worked. With the new update it's much more persistent. Pulling the plug doesn't always work, sometimes it takes hours before it'll work. I've now turned off Sleep in Energy Settings but I don't like that solution either.

I've had this issue since Leopard as well (or on occasion on wake the main monitor becomes the primary display and the MacBook's is blank... odd that it loses the built-in display).

Firstly I would imagine (hope) this is in the defect database, but because it's been going on so long I assume either it's not being treated as a bug or is too complex to find and easy solution before (though I can't see why a rescan on wake up would be that hard).

eww, I don't believe the problem is trivial. With 2x 27" of screen real estate and 15-20 apps open, it's a real disruption to return to the machine after going for a coffee and finding that I have to power cycle the static-filled monitor, thus losing all of the window positions I've had open in previous hours. I guess the alternative is turning off power savings with regards to the monitors, but that doesn't seem a good solution. Occasionally I find this same static goes away when I jiggle the ridiculously clumsy mini display port to DVI adaptor. Perhaps it's time for Apple to release a mini display port to HDMI adaptor, and maybe that will be the fix.

I also have this issue for forever!
It's actually quite annoying. Have a Macmini, and 2 external monitors.

This doesn't happen all the time the monitor goes to sleep, but most of the times.

I always need to turn off the monitor and turn it back again to solve it which is quite annoying!

At work, have an iMac with an external monitor, and the external monitor always gets static when the monitor sleeps!!

C'mon apple!! Think it's time to start resolving this simple issue that's been going on for a long time!!

I also have this problem, and it seems that almost everyone I know with an external monitor has this problem.
I have a new Macbook Pro 15" connected to a Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD through a mini-DP to HDMI adapter. The display had worked perfectly for a while, but all of a sudden they decided to be a pain. Sometimes when I turn my computer on the display comes on straight away. Sometimes I have to plug it out and in again. Sometimes I spend hours doing combinations of plugging in whilst asleep, closing the lid whilst re-booting, closing the lid and re-booting with it plugged in, none of which worked. I've tried resetting the PRAM, I've tried re-instsalling, I've phoned Apple Support, I've tried what Apple said in their statement over a year ago. None of these work.
This is seriously frustrating. Argh!

This just happened to me for the first time. Am using the Apple branded mini DP to DVI adapter connected to a Viewsonic VX2240W from my mid 2010 MBP 13.

When the static appeared, i turned the monitor off, opened the MBP 13 lid which thankfully resumed everything back onto the MBP display. Then turned the monitor back on, closed the MBP lid, and resumed into clamshell mode clicking the mouse. Will be miffed if this happens again...

Hi cheesypieleo,

I hope you find solution for your problem. My Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD do not turn off when I close my MBP at all used to do when was connect with the D-Sub cable but not anymore with HDMI.
I just a question for you: How is your Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD works with your macbook pro? I have the same monitor/tv and is blurry for me. I did connect my MBP withMINI-dp and HDMI cable and still lil blurry for me. The quality is not good for a monitor. Am I doing wrong connection or what? I still can return the Samsung SyncMaster FX2490HD back if I can't fix it. I found a lot of people complaining about the same thing on amazon.com

thank you and I will appreciate your reply....

To everyone experiencing the frustrating "static on display when resuming from sleep", I think I finally got the solution to resolve the problem. Since the most recent versions of OSX are using "TV resolution" to configure digital displays (such as 1080p, 720p...) I thought maybe my mac was trying to "talk" with my displays in a "TV language" so I went in my SyncMaster's display setup and changed a few settings to fix the "miscommunication" between my mac and the displays. Surprise! After many months of frustration, it finally fixed the problem!

Here's what I changed in the SyncMaster's setup menu:

Under "SIZE & POSITION" menu, go to "Image Size" and set to "Screen Fit"

Under "SETUP & RESET" menu (down on the second page with my model), go to "Auto Source" and set to "Manual"

Finally, still under the same "SETUP & RESET" menu page, go to "PC/AV Mode" and set to "AV"

Bingo! Now when the computer wakes up from sleep, the screens are going back on like a charm!

Hope this will help people who had the same issue using MacPro with Samsung SyncMaster displays, worked for me anyways!...

Cheers!
