Feb 23, 2016 4:20 PM in response to uniquefocuspdby Mark Piaskiewicz1,I swear by Disk Warrior and Scannerz, but multiple backups make them less necessary than they used to be.

Mar 18, 2016 10:55 AM in response to Mark Piaskiewicz1by MrWilliams201,Unfortunately, a lot of people don't back up. In fact, it usually doesn't become SOP until after a disaster. Even then, they typically have just one backup drive, so your tools may still be use.

May 7, 2016 6:52 AM in response to atomicclockby judithfromlewiston,I have been with Apple since 1994 and I used to have to unplug all the cables from my computer and any outside devices (we use to call them peripherals)
Funny how that still works today. I used your method of unplugging my backup drive in the order you said. Voila! It worked. Thanks,

May 24, 2016 7:24 AM in response to Weeblerockby MO Rose,I was having the same issue and was able to resolve it pretty easily. I disconnected the external drive form my Mac, opened Time Machine and deleted the back up drive. Then told it to set a new back up drive, reconnected the drive to the Mac and it recognized it just fine. However I can't right click on the icon for the drive to tell it to back up like I used to. I had to add the Time Machine icon to my menu bar and I can right click that to start a back up.

Jun 2, 2016 8:11 PM in response to Weeblerockby shemilhs,Hi,
Try to plug the external cable to your Mac and wait about good 20-30 minutes. If you check in terminal by typing "diskutil list", you will see your hard disk listed. It takes some time for the OS to process and show the hard disk. Just be patient. -
Jun 30, 2016 5:49 AM in response to Weeblerockby martins210,when i plug in my external drive, this message comes on "the disk you inserted can not be readed by this computer. (format) (ignore) (eject)"
what do i do?

Jun 30, 2016 8:08 AM in response to martins210by Mark Piaskiewicz1,First try a new cable and if that doesn't work, try a new enclosure. If that fails, try formatting the drive.

Jun 30, 2016 8:41 AM in response to Weeblerockby davidliwei,I tried different methods and finally one method solved my problem: install the latest Paragon Driver for Mac OS. Once you restart your mac, it will work out. Here is the link:

Jun 30, 2016 8:54 AM in response to davidliweiby Mark Piaskiewicz1,OS X is able to read NTFS without a driver. I used to use Paragon until it became apparent that it was the cause of a number of intermittent problems. If I need compatibility with Windows I just format the drive ExFat since OS X supports it natively.
-
Jun 30, 2016 10:19 AM in response to Mark Piaskiewicz1by davidliwei,I don't think OSX supports NTFS reasonably well, even the latest version of OS X. I already see a lot of reading issues with hard drives using NTFS. Unfortunately many of the Windows users have a NTFS formatted hard drive, and it simply doesn't work on OS X. This is something Apple should really solve.

Jul 13, 2016 2:19 AM in response to Weeblerockby thatguycalumb,Okay so I know this feed is really old, but I had the same problem and I managed to solve it. You need to get your hands on a Windows Machine. Plug in your hard drive, then open the start menu. Right click on "Computer," and go to "Manage." In the bar on the left go to "Disk Management." Your hard drive is presumably "disk 1." Right click on the middle volume for your disk (not the unallocated volume, or the boot volume). Then click "Delete Volume." Now that the information is deleted, unplug your HD and plug it into your Mac. Go to "Disk Utility" and it should recognise it. It should automatically offer to reformat the disk. Make sure to reformat it as "OS Extended (Journaled)." Now you should be able to use it.
I hope this works for you, and good luck!

Jul 28, 2016 10:48 AM in response to Weeblerockby GameFederer,I have a 1TB Western Digital.
It's not being read by my iMac anymore. I have the latest 27" 4k retina
It won't show up in Disk Utility either.
I took it out of the WD case and am using a USB 3.0 external enclosure with it's own power source.
Turns on, disk is spinning but nothing is showing up still.

Jul 28, 2016 9:15 PM in response to GameFedererby GameFederer,I connected to a Windows computer and it connected as an external enclosure but it never showed up amongst the hard drives.
All the uses were checked except a big X for "Mass USB Storage Drive"
So I'm assuming the disk is dead.
