iTunes starts up whenever I connect my bluetooth headset

I am using bluetooth headset to communicate on Skype. Whenever somebody's calling me, I turn my headset on and it will automatically connect to my MacBook. Every time, however, it will also automatically start iTunes and begins to play. I don't want this behavior, since instead of listening to music I would actually want to talk on Skype. How can I change this?

Possible explanation to this could be that headphones may send "Play" button message to the computer once connected, since this is same button that is used to turn them on/off. I am not sure however, if they actually do send this button. But in case they do, how can I disable iTunes startup on Play button? Is there are an official way to do it or should I really go with something like this: http://superuser.com/questions/31925/stop-play-pause-button-opening-itunes-in-sn ow-leopard/39390#39390.

I've got this figured out.

On OSX, the "RCD" (remote control daemon) is responsible for the naughtiness. It has hard-coded list of actions to do when it detects certain "events" - one of them being connecting to a bluetooth headset.

To disable this behaviour (minimal loss of functionality, possibly your apple remote won't work):

1. Open Terminal

2. Enter (these are two separate commands)

launchctl stop com.apple.rcd

launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.rcd.plist

This should stop rcd from being launched by OSX. No rcd - no auto-magic multimedia. Your volume keys should continue working, but things like play key (or bluetooth) auto-starting iTunes should stop.

PS: The following is the nuclear option. In Terminal, enter:

sudo chmod 000 /System/Library/CoreServices/rcd.app/Contents/MacOS/rcd

sudo pkill -9 rcd

To stop rcd from even being started by any app. To restore your rcd, use:

sudo chmod 755 /System/Library/CoreServices/rcd.app/Contents/MacOS/rcd

launchctl start com.apple.rcd

iTunes misbehavior persists when the Phaton PS BTNC is plugged in.

Remedies proposed over the last 3 page are appreciated, but do not work.

iTunes opens about every 15 minutes while bluetooth is on, no matter what.

Any Apple Employee:

Why didn't the beta testers notice this?

Apple Employee, in light of Mac users' heroic, but unsuccessful, attempts to mitigate this misbehavior/annoyance, what is your plan to take this problem to the senior leadership?

What is your plan to bring a solution to this web page?

Annoyances are for PC users, Mac users shouldn't have to put up with this nonsense.

Yep, they work and I didn't had any sound problems so far. Call Logitech, they have a good support, maybe they can help you.

BUT be careful with the plastic head band. Mine broke 2 months ago as I took the headphones off my head with the normal way of pulling the speakers a bit apart off my ears. Theres some kind of predetermined breaking point. I got them replaced by Logitech.

on Mavericks:

"permission denied"

bash-3.2$ mv ./iTunes.app iTuneeF.app

mv: rename ./iTunes.app to iTuneeF.app: Permission denied

bash-3.2$

bash-3.2$ su mv ./iTunes.app iTuneeF.app

Password:

su: Sorry

__

edit:

after:

sudo mv ./iTunes.app iTuneeF.app

the name changes/... but the bluetooth still fires up the renamed app. and i have a iTunes.app with script to quite the iTuneef.app

OK, this is insane:

i copied the renamed iTunes to external drvie, removed it completly form internal drive

than ejected external drive and connected bluetooth speaker.

nothink happend - no asking "where is iTunes". silen - OK

second i connected external drive to different computer, renamed my already rnamed itunes to lest say "fckTunes".

than i moved it to another volum - this time NTFS vole and renamed again (like 4rd time)

than i connected the external drive back to my mac, coonected bluetooth again, and nothink happened.

but as soon as i moved the now coled "syperdupper.app" itunes back to my desctop (so not even app folder)

it emediatly lunched after another bluetooth connect.

this was like escaping you CIA agents that follow you in the city. long way with many tunnels, corners and shortcuts and NO succes. I WAS CATCHED by apples CIA.

i give up.

fck it. it drives me nuts (with some other super moverisck futures) BUT still wont swith to WINDOWS 8.1 update 1 version 7 ....

sorry for my english mistakes.

I am on MBP with Mavericks 10.9.2. Not only does iTunes start but it continues interfering with the bluetooth transmission. I got a Bose BT Headset that works awesomely with all devices including iOS devices, but with the iTunes running, it breaks the transmission of audio every few seconds.

I REALLY WISH APPLE PRODUCT MANAGERS WERE WATCHING THIS AND DID SOMETHING ABOUT THIS FEATURE.

This problem drives me crazy. I just want to watch a video in a webpage I'm using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop to design for, connect bluetooth headset and iTunes starts up with Last.FM in its wake. Deleting ituneshelper from startup items works until I restart the computer and its back again and there's no way to change the bluetooth connect behaviour.

This is ridiculous.

I just read through this thread and a similar one the last 2hrs ago trying and trying but there's still no legit solution for this.

i dont wanna use a workaround requiring me to use the terminal each time, nor do I want to rename an app, I mean ..come on how is it possible Apple that such simple things are denied to your customers, we're not even talking about using 3rd party software instead of yours, but simply want to be able to connect our **** BT speakers to our system without having that app launching automatically ..PLEASE FIX THIS!

I've just replied and subscribed to this thread to get notificiations for a fix. I have a pair of creative WP-450 bluetooth headphones and noticed this happening on a work Mac Mini with Mavericks.

Mine doesn't start playing anything, it just seems to launch iTunes. I use spotify for music, thus my iTunes library is empty. It can't start playing if there is nothing to play. I don't know if clearing out iTunes is an option for anyone here, but it could help.

Anyway, that's just my two cents. Hopefully if there's a solution out there someone will find it and integrate it into TinkerTool or something.

I tried countless methods on these forums to suppress iTunes from opening every time I connect my Beats Studio Wireless headphones to no avail, but this solution worked like a charm. Following the next restart, unfortunately iTunes opened automatically after connecting my headphones once again. I have the application in my Dock which was still named, "MyiTunes", but to my amazement, I found that a new instance of "iTunes" was created and opened. I checked my application folder and found (2) iTunes applications. The existing one which I renamed in accordance with your directions and a new application called simply "iTunes".

I followed your process to the letter and everything transpired as you said it would. I renamed the app, created the "DoNothing" app and pointed to it once OSX asked "Where is iTunes". It just created a new instance of iTunes and opened it. I'm basically lost at this point.

Anyone else deal with this?

I would really like to know when this is going to be fixed. I hate this behavior. Someone was way too clever or bored when they implemented this. It *****.

Apple: At least respond to the community about this horribly annoying problem. Will iTunes and Bluetooth just suck forever, or are you going to listen and do something about it? You don't have to take it away, just let us turn it off.
