my mac won't play sound!!

Over the past few days my mac's sound has been cutting out when watching videos through quicktime. It will start the video and play it but with no sound when i press the mute or volume buttons it seems as though they have been disabled as it shows up on the screen with a sort of stop sign. When listening to music on iTunes it is playing fine so i know that the speakers are fine. The videos will also stop and start as if it is buffering but it can't be because i have downloaded the video already!

Anyone got any good ideas???

MacBook, Mac OS X (10.5.8)

Sounds like for some reason it's trying to change to digital output mode. Next time it happens, look at the headphone jack. If you see a red light, it's in digital output mode. This happens from time to time, and you basically just try and put in a pair of headphones or speakers a couple of times until it turns off. If you can't get it to switch back after a dozen or so tries, you should probably take it to an AASP or Apple store, because you're going to need a new logic board.
