Hi Stedman
But will the battery EVER record a charge of 100%?
I have just purchased two NuPower High Capacity (71W) batteries from Newer Technology and neither is showing a State of Health above 97% but both reach a State of Charge of 99 - 100%. I doubt that they will ever deliver what NewerTech promise, i.e., 6600mAh. Both batteries fall short by 200 - 500mAh. Recalibration brings about little improvement. But why should 'new' batteries not achieve their stated specification?
I have a theory the Apple's battery updater may actual regulate the charging rate and final capacity in order to address an early issue with batteries that resulted in overheating, distortion, catching fire and even exploding. If true, reducing the charging current slightly will increase battery life and eliminate the aforementioned problems.
I have been investigating smart batteries and particularly the SMBus which the battery's internal processor uses to instruct the MBPs charger to supply it with charging current. The battery is 'master', the charger is 'slave'. But what if software within the MBP modifies (lessens) the charging current demanded by the battery? You will never see a battery with 100% SoC or SoH.

Phil
