"iPodService.exe" Fails Register During Install & Fails to Start

Last night, I downloaded and installed iTunes 10 on my Windows XP SP3 laptop as an upgrade from 9.2 using the 'Update' utility that is installed on the 'Start' menu.

During the installation, I saw the "iPodService.exe" executable failed to register itself correctly and also the 'iPod Service' service failed to start, I checked the 'Application' event log on the laptop and I found that the following events are being logged;

Source: Application Error
Event ID: 1000

Faulting application iPodService.exe, version 10.0.0.68, faulting module ntdll.dll, version 5.1.2600.5755, fault address 0x0001b21a.

and

Event Type: Error
Event Source: MsiInstaller
Event ID: 11920
Product: iTunes -- Error 1920. Service 'iPod Service' (iPod Service) failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services.

I use an account this is a local Administrator, so that I know that the have the required permissions. I have gone through the steps of rebooting, uninstalling iTunes, rebooting and then re-installing iTunes - but each time, I try the process if fails again. I have also downloaded the standalone installer, but not joy.

I also find that these events are logged when ever I start iTunes.

Has anybody experienced these?

I installed iTunes 10 on my MacBook at the weekend and its a dream to use, it just seems to be a Windows-related issue.

Many thanks in advance,

Mac Book Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.4), iTunes 9.2, iPod Touch 2G - iOS 4.0

I specifically signed up to help solve this problem.

Follow the below to return to v9.2.1.4 easily:

1. Delete the folder C:\Program Files\iPod\bin
2. Download bin.rar (contains the \bin directory from v9.2.1.4) from https://docs.google.com/uc?id=0B_WmQHWVxtHvZjJlY2I2NzUtYTFkNy00YTc4LThlN2ItNGJiM zEyOWY2ZWY1&export=download&hl=en
3. Move bin.rar to the folder C:\Program Files\iPod and unrar it into the current folder.
4. Should appear the folder C:\Program Files\iPod\bin
5. Delete bin.rar
6. Reboot
7. Enjoy the old version 9.2.1.4

pcoats says to download the various iTunes v10 install files from iTunes update. Where is iTunes update, exactly? If I go to the Apple site I only see how to download the full iTunesSetup.exe file, not separate files.

PS: I too get this error on XP, but it doesn't prevent me from syncing my iPod Touch, just my older, traditional iPod.

I had this same problem last night, kept getting "iPod service error" messages. iTunes 10 worked though and I was able to sync my iPhone. Then I tried updating the OS on the iPhone and everything went bad. The iPhone died and I couldn't get the computer or iTunes to recognize it. I followed the steps above and now everything is back to normal using v.9 of iTunes. Thanks for posting this fix. Apple needs to fix this as this is a major screw up.

Note: I didn't follow all steps, just uninstalled iTunes10, removed the paths to iTunes in the programs/and common files folders, downloaded and installed iTunes9, renamed the "iTunes Library.itl" file to "iTunes Library Old.itl", then pulled the latest iTunes Library file from the Previous iTunes Library folder and saved it in the iTunes folder as "iTunes Library.itl".

Hi,
Thanks very much for your suggestion. I was experiencing the same problem with brand new iphone4 from 3. I use a laptop from company which runs on Windows XP with SP3. While installing for the first time i faced the same error message but ignored. Iphone worked for day and then next day when i connected iphone with itunes it asked for a update of OS, i clicked yes and then after an hour and half noothing in the iphone. I was surprised, spoke to company's IT department, technical support of 3 and then visited local 3 shop, they asked me to visit some apple shope which is miles away from my place. Then i started searching the solution self on internet and luckily got yours. I follweed the exact steps mentioned on your suggestion and it has worked. Thanks very much Mate!!

I think apple technical department should have a look into this problems and try to resolve asap and i hope they would do that...

Thanks once again for your innovation....cheers!!

IF YOU ALREADY HAVE iTUNES 10 INSTALLED HERE'S ANOTHER SOLUTION.

There is another option to get this working AFTER iTunes 10 has been installed. Note however that this is not for the faint at heart, i.e. get your 13 year old son or grandson to help you if needed! 😀

1) Download 7zip (do a search on google for it).
1.a) Install it after downloaded

2) Download iTunes 9.2 setup file from here: http://www.downloadatoz.com/pda-mobile_directory/itunes/
2.a) Make sure to save "iTunesSetup.exe" to a folder somewhere that you can find it and extract files contained in it.
2.b) DO NOT INSTALL iTUNES 9.2 BECAUSE iTUNES 10 IS ALREADY INSTALLED

3) Open the "iTunesSetup.exe" file with 7zip and extract the contents.
4) Open the "iTunes.msi" file with 7zip and extract the "iTunes.cab" file ONLY.
5) Open the "iTunes.cab" file with 7zip and look for the "iPodService.exe" file and extract it ONLY.
6) Copy the "iPodService.exe" file to C:\Program Files\iPod\bin

7) DING! All done. You can now open your version of iTunes 10 and everything should work!
7.a) If it still fails, you may need to copy "ipodservice.dll" from "iTunes.cab" to "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin\iPodService.Resources" as well.

Worked great -- then I tried to update the iphone...

Everything was working fine w/v10 and the 9.2 iPodService until I tried to update to the latest IOS. I'm not sure if it uses the recovery service driver to push the firmware, but my iphone went into a semi-bricked state, where it only displayed the 'connect to itunes' image. It's as if during the upgrade it changed drivers -- or possibly when the iphone reboots during the upgrade process.

Windows showed the apple mobile device driver, and the USB composite, but iTunes 10 w/9.2 iPodService would NOT recognize the ipod as connected --
So I had to uninstall everything and revert to 9.2

I'll attempt this process again to verify this behavior - after which I'll simply update the IOS first BEFORE moving to the itunes mixed state.

Edit: I should add that I replaced both the EXE and the DLL.
