Factory Unlocked iPhone 4 not working with a different SIM

Recently, I bought a factory unlocked iphone 4 in Australia and brought it back to India and activated the phone through iTunes using an already trimmed SIM(since there are no Micro sims available in my country) of 'Cellone' Carrier that I was using for my iPad since quite some time.

The phone got activated without any issues and I was able to use all the functionalities of it. However, my 'Cellone' SIM is meant for data usage on my ipad and for regular calling purpose, I want to use my 'Airtel' Carrier SIM. Hence, I have trimmed my Airtel SIM to fit into my new iphone 4.

However when I insert the Airtel SIM, the phone is not recognized it and shows the "No SIM" message. I'm very sure that I have properly trimmed the Airtel SIM because when I insert the same Airtel SIM in my Ipad 3G, Ipad recognizes it properly and I'm able to browse the web.

Also, on my new Iphone 4, I have inserted another Micro SIM (apart from the Cellone SIM) which it recognizes properly. All that the issue is it is just not recognizing my Airtel SIM.

This being the situation, now I have gone clueless. Firstly, I was under the assumption that Factory unlocked iphone allows to use only one carrier SIM (in my case the Cellone SIM). However, it seems my understanding is not correct, since the phone recognizes another Micro SIM. Any help in this matter is greatly appreciated.

I'm afraid that the most likely cause is that the sim card is damaged in some way. I would get Airtel to send a replacement if you can, test it in another phone and then try again.

FaceTime will not work on (Even Factory-Unlocked) IP4s in country whose carriers do not officially carry IP4 yet (Indian).
You can make calls as you please.
But no facetime...requires activation through a silent text to england and back through a carrier supporting IP4.

Dear Vartanarsen..not sure why you feel that facetime won't work in India. It has already been tested successfully. Pls check the below link.

Also, FaceTime is already activated in our phones. All that it requires is a Wifi connectivity.

Well you can go to National Market and get it done or just next to it there is Bajaj Complex there are many shops out there..
All are close to Majestic Bus Station..

Hello Pls help me ... i got a factory unlocked iphone 4 from the US couple of weeks ago ... its on FW 4.0.2 .. whn i connected to itunes it said activating phone and i can now see all my apps and use the internet on the phone through wifi ... now my only concern is ... if i insert a airtel micro sim it locks the phone and says emergency calls only .. not sure why ... this is factory unlocked and i paid $600 ... please let me know what i need to do here ... ur response will be greatly appreciated..

There are no US factory unlocked iPhones. They are all locked to AT&T.

This is factory unlocked and i paid $600

The $600.00 price just means you don't have to sign a two year contract. It is still locked to AT&T.

Well if its a factory unlocked phone then that problem should not come dude.
Listen first of all get the sim card cut properly coz i tried and mine also didn't work, so dont panic and get it cut through a micro sim card cutter.
Still if the problem creeps on then there is some serious issue and you need to contact the apple store from where u bought it, even if its bought through online.

As Malcom said, no phones sold in the US are unlocked, they are all locked to AT&T, the $600 are just without a contract but still locked to AT&T.

Return it if you can and purchase one elsewhere that sells them factory unlocked.

Hi i have an iphone 4, factory unlocked from UK, been using it from last one month on vodafone pre-paid, but uptill now am not able to get facetime activated. i have tried all and every thing posted on the forums and blogs.... but no success. Have you been able to activate facetime on your iphone 4 with vodafone sim.... if i put my bsnl sim it activates right away but not with vodafone..... let me know...
