iPhone 4 frozen

While using an app on my iPhone 4 the phone has completely frozen. I cannot return to the menu or turn the phone off and all calls go to voicemail as unanswered. Even removing the sim card has no effect. The picture has frozen on the screen. Do I have to wait until the battery goes flat before I can do anything?

What next if the reset doesn't work?

Have new iPhone, just updated to OS 4.1. Update went through fine and all looked well, then the iPhone went completely dead. Can't get any response from it at all.

Have also tried holding down the power button and home buttons together for 10 seconds but that hasn't worked either.

Plugging into iTunes the phone cannot be seen either...have I bricked it in some way?

Plug it into a wall charger for ~30 minutes. Then try turning it on. If that doesn't work, see if you can force the phone into recovery mode:

Leave the USB cable connected to your computer, but NOT your phone, itunes running, press & hold the home button while connecting the USB cable to your dock connector, continue holding the home button until you see “Connect to iTunes” on the screen. You may now release the home button. iTunes should now display that it has detected your phone in recovery mode, if not quit and reopen iTunes. If you still don’t see the recovery message repeat these steps again. iTunes will give you the option to restore from a backup or set up as new.

If that doesn't work, make an appointment at an Apple store.

Something bizarre happened overnight. I was going to take my now useless brick to the Apple Store. Just thought I'd plug it in to see if there was any life.

To my amazement, it woke up. Told me the battery was completely flat so I'm now charging it, but it has completely come back to life.

The fact the battery has fully discharged overnight suggests it was working on something while I was having my problems with it yesterday evening. Any ideas on what could cause this kind of problem?

Symptoms - after update to OS 4.1; screen goes completely blank and iPhone will not respond to any kind of command or combination of button pressing. It doesn't get gradually hot or anything like that. It won't respond if plugged in to an external charger; it's not recognised by iTunes; it won't respond to iTunes even if you try to 'force' it (as in the process described above).

Any advice would be welcome!

Richard
