"No Service" when emerging from subway or tunnel

Whenever I come out of a subway or tunnel, my iPhone 4 says 'No Service.' I would expect this message to go away after a minute or two as the signal is re-acquired. However, even overnight, the signal never comes back and the phone continues to say No Service.

My orginal Iphone 2G did not have this problem.
