How do you select audio and video

How do you select audio and video at the same time. Currently I have to select video and the cut and then select audio to cut from timeline. It seems that I'm missing some buttons.

MacBook Pro5,1 - 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Mac OS X (10.5.5)

Is the "Linked Selection" button in the timeline turned on? Click Shift-L and see if it makes a difference.

The Linked Selection is turned on (green light), but I have to select the audio and video separately. I used to be able to do it easily, but it seems that it is not working.
