Playing songs with iTunes 10

My husband updated to iTunes 10, and for some reason, can't play songs unless they're checked. I don't recall this being necessary before. He's got a ton of songs on his macbook pro, and it would take forever to check them all. When he does select all, it just highlights everything, and doesn't check the songs.

What are we missing here? When he pushes the play button, nothing happens because nothing's checked. Only things that are checked are played. We're not technology idiots, but we can't figure out what the problem is...I've searched the discussions and didn't see anything helpful. If I've missed it, I apologize. Help please 🙂

If they are unchecked, you can only play a song by selecting it and press Play.
Only things that are checked are played.

As it has been since the checkmarks were added to iTunes. (version4, I believe).
and it would take forever to check them all.

Command click one of the boxes to check/uncheck them all.
Or select all then right click - Check (or unchecK) selection.
