ipod touch 4th gen only comes with 256MB memory!

Most people were presuming the new ipod touch would come with 512MB like the new iphone so it could handle the new hires screen, HD video and run iMovie etc that came on both devices.

However it now seems the ipod only got half the memory of the iphone? If a decision was made to increase the memory on the iphone 4 to 512MB, presumably so users could work with HD video amongst other things, why does the ipod touch not need the extra memory as well?

They both have the same cpu, screen resolution, hd video and imovie support so why does one device need twice as much memory as the other?

Hi,
I'm a bit confused by the numbers the application gave you, because if you add them together you just get 164MB. Because of that I checked out what iStat Pro says about my iPod Touch 3G and here are the results:
Wired:45MB
Active:35MB
Inactive:18MB
Free: 5MB
=> 103MB
So there has to be a difference between the 3G and the 4G, doesn't it?

Hopefully iFixit will give us some facts.

Those application that reads of how much memory it has on your device, it might work fine on older devices like third generations and IPhone 3GS, but for such new device like the iPod touch 4th generation it will give wrong information. I say this because a lot of those application comes with a warning that devices like Iphone 4(which has 512MB), may have problems diagnosing the amount of memory that is really available on the device.

Remember that those application is still running old versions, the developers themselves most update the application to give accurate information specially devices that became available today like the iPod touch 4G.

Im not sure about the 256mb ram, but you are wrong... there is vibrate... at least for facetime.

No vibrate on the 4G Touch, if this was spec'd on Apple's page they removed it:

Regarding the RAM, it is quite possible that the 8GB version that was disassembled uses 256MB while the 32 and 64GB models may use 512MB. It wouldn't be the first time Apple differentiated the models.

I would like to agree with ya rockmyplimsoul, but I think this year evident is speaking louder than ever. I know in the past apple had made differences on the hardware issues on the iPod touch on previous generations. Thus encouraging people to pay for higher models like the 32GB and 64GB, however if you read apple page about the iPod touch looks like this year every model got the same treatment. I was surprised when Ifixit found that it was inferior in hardware specs compared to the IPhone(on parts like the display and battery, and RAM). It was a stupid decision of apple limiting the RAM on the iPod touch, specially when the new iPod touch supports IMovie and other application that might use a lot of RAM. Apple made some wrong sacrifices on the specs of the iPod touch that in the future might make an impact when more games comes out on the app store eithmore intense graphics and capacity.

Only?! Only?!! Lol. No offense, but it's a frigid iPod.....hello! :-p

Seriously. The iPad has 256mb of memory, and it rocks for surfing the web and watching HD video.

So I think it'll be fine for anything you want to do on an iPod touch too.

I mean, you can shoot HD video with the iPod touch! Make phone calls and video calls. Shoot stills and email them. In addition to playing all your music. All this without the contract of the iPhone.

Me? I am MORE than happy with the specs of the 4G iPod touch. Will future updates get more features? Sure. But I for one am gonna nab this one fo sho. It's got everything I need. 🙂

I think Apple opted for 256MB of RAM because the iPod doesn't have to run the GPS and all of the background phone software to keep your phone working like the iPhone 4 does. Just like the Game Center is compatible with the 2nd Gen iPod Touch and not the iPhone 3G even though they are similarly spec'd, the iPhone still runs more software in the background waiting for calls, SMS, and MMS.
