Nov 13, 2010 5:41 PM in response to Tigorby James Mol,Using Safari 5.0.1 and Snow Leopard I used part of what I found online and stumbled across the final solution indicated by brackets {}
From <http://mac-dvd.com/mac-guide/how-to-download-youtube-video-on-mac-for-free.htm l>
Step 1: Download the videos
1. Find your favorite YouTube video. This step is pretty self explanatory. Be sure to use Safari and search for your favorite YouTube Video. {Select 720 p or greater.}
2. Next, you need to go to 'Window' and down to Activity. Click on 'Activity' to bring up the next dialog box.
3. Once the dialog box has popped up you need to look for the YouTube page among all the page titles and files listed in the window.
4. Once you locate it and expand all the activities going on in the page, look for the largest file size (this is shown in the right hand side). Most of the files found in a YouTube page are small files while most FLV files are several megabytes.
Once you locate the largest file,
What I found out:
{Hold down the SHIFT OPTION key and double click on it. The video should start downloading in your download and be named videoplayback.mp4.}
What I found out in the videos I tested is that if you did not use 720p or higher, SHIFT OPTION double clicking or just double clicking on the large file in the activity window downloaded an FLV file, which you then have to convert to mp4.
Hope this helps.

Nov 16, 2010 5:03 PM in response to James Molby hw6063,This option worked for me. However the mp4 file is much larger than an flv file.
I used to be able to just go to Activity,then find the videoplayback.flv file and double click on it.
The file would start to download. Not anymore. -

Firefox Download Helper is also supposed to work, you have to be logged into YouTube first.

http://www.real.com/realplayer/mac
which also downloads videos from YouTube.
There is also iTubeX which allows you to download videos (Flash, HTML5 and others), .mp3 and .swf files from almost every website as easily as possible:

Dec 1, 2010 11:43 AM in response to Tigorby musick7,Hi Tigor,
If your Using Safari (I think any Version, Im using Safari 5.0.3 on intel Mac.) Which I've done the same thing on earlier version of Safari. as early as Safari 4.
Click the "WINDOW" Tab at the Top. Scroll down to ACTIVITY Click it. If you have only ONE (1) Tab open it will make this Much easier… If not just close All Tabs but the YouTube.com Tab. Find the largest file over 1MB most will be over 10MB Double click it and it will open in the download window. your done.
Follow Detailed instructions below.
Step 1
Select ~Safari/Window/Activity
Step 2
Within the Activity window that opens, Select Youtube ~ Click the Arrow next to youtube
Step 3
Look for a File that has 1MB or Larger. I just Downloaded Transformers 1 Trailer in HD it was about 1min long and 13.6MB
Once you double click that larger file you'll see the Download window open and it will begin downloading…
Step 4
Your done. Find the file in your Home Folder "Downloads"
HINT:
This works for Almost Everything. Including Steaming Movies or Tv Shows on a almost every website.
However it doesn't work for Hulu.com
It will however download Hulu Commercials… But not the shows…
Hint 2:
If you want to Download Tv Shows like this you can always go to Letmewatchthis.com It works well there! -
Nov 20, 2011 4:50 PM in response to James Molby Nello Lucchesi,Excellet. Working for me on Safari 5.1.1 under OSX 10.6.8.
Only one modification.
If the YouTube video has a link that says, "Use Original Player" then I found I had to click that link in order to see the file in the Safari Activity window.
