iPhone 4 Software Update (4.1) Download Error

Using the latest iTunes version, I tried updating my iPhone 4 software to the latest 4.1 version, yet I keep getting the following error: (err=3259. Network Connection Timed Out).

I read all relevant articles as to solve this problem, and I tried the following solutions with no result:

- Full system file cleanup and clean system startup in addition to iPhone full restart

- Disabling Windows firewall and Defender

- Disabling antivirus and network security program

- Stopping all Windows Firewall and Defender services from the task manager

- Following (MSCONFIG) conflict troubleshooting instructions as suggested in this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2292

- Trying to only Download the software update instead of Download and Update from iTunes

In addition to eating three bars of chocolate to calm myself down. This is a 590MB file, and it takes about 40 minutes to download. The error message shows after fully downloading the file and while it is processed. Doing so for more than 4 times with all failing attempts in between to troubleshoot the problem is enough to drive anyone crazy!

Can Apple make life easy in seriously overcoming this issue?! The same problem I encountered previously when I tried to update my iPod and iTouch software as well.

A starting point would be to enable saving the software update file and manually updating the device instead of having to download from scratch every time. HELP PLS.

Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. Since you've disabled all of your security software(the usual cause), your problem could very well be that Apple's servers are simply overwhelmed...this happens every time an iphone software update is released & gets worse as more & more phones are sold. You've got everybody in the world all trying to update at the same time. I can only suggest waiting.

Thanks for the reply. This is exactly why we should be enabled to save the file to the hard disk and then manually update the software.

My four attempts as well as others are not helping in reducing download traffic on the server. The download speed is excellent, but when the file is processed I keep getting this error.

I've got that very same error, and tried more than 4 times! Apple, as you've said, should allow users to download the iphone upgrades and install them local.

The number of users is an excuse, apple should be better.

After unsuccessfully trying all the suggestions, I tried attaching my computer directly to the ethernet port of the 2wire Router/Modem instead of having it connect wirelessly. Thought the faster, more reliable connection might help. Don't know if it was coincidence or not, but the download and install of OS 4.1 to my IPhone 4 went flawlessly that time. Worth a try, if people trying to update are on a wireless network.....

Thanks for the info Danny. I tried direct wire connection after reading your post, in addition to disabling all wireless connection processes, antivirus program, and Windows firewall and defender but it still didn't work.

The problem is I have the update completely downloaded, but when it is processing I get that error message. I even tried putting my iPhone in Airplane Mode to avoid any interruption with no success.

*It finally worked!*

I have no clue why and how! The only thing I made different this time is unlocking my iPhone screen just seconds before installation!

I didn't even disable antivirus and firewall!

And thanks God all of my data, applications, music and photos are well and sound!

I pray however that no other update will ever be launched, as I do not want to go through this mess again!

So, try the unlock thing guys, and if it works for you as well, then we can declare this issue solved.

Simply when you see the download bar reads like 9 seconds remaining, just "slide to unlock." This could be mere luck or the remedy!

I had the same problem two times trying to update IP4 using my Windows XP machine. Switched to my Windows 7 computer and updated the first time. My XP computer has updated a IP3GS in the past, not sure if that causes a problem with a file somewhere when updating IP4.

My phone & computer completely froze when trying to do this update - not even 1/4 of the way through. (I left it for hours thinking it was just slow) I couldn't get it off the computer screen and my phone was stuck as well - eventually I had to restart the computer and then the phone showed the icons of the USB plug & Itunes on the screen, so when itunes loaded it said my phone was now in Recovery Mode and needed to be restored!!! 😟 Well I tried restoring it TWICE - and it wouldn't install past that 1/4 mark (where the update froze) - the second attempt I got an error message that itunes encountered an error and could not continue... but they'd let me know if they find a solution to the problem. GREAT. Now I have no phone at all. 😟
PS - I did a whole clear out on the computer of the files, caches, etc. - Even ran a malware scan - restarted, installed the new itunes 10 - everything I could possibly think of to get my stuff up and running again. Unfortunately so far nothing seems to work. Anyone else get this???

I had the same error last night--I have satellite so my opportunity to download updates this big is between 1am and 6am central DST. I also have a verizon wireless hotspot that I tried this morning, which resulted in the same error. I'm trying it a second time with the firewall and anti-virus disabled.

[rant] It's plain ridiculous that apple requires us to download almost 600MB with each update. It used to be near 400MB (3.x.x firmware). At this rate it won't be long before updates will break 1GB. What really gets me is apple will let you download the entire file and THEN fail comms. ***? So what if their servers are down, at least program iTunes to pause the process like every other file! It's common sense. [/rant]

Have the latest itunes version and then restart the computer. Then sync your iphone. Error is resolved.
