I have a GREAT Rev.B iMAC... I'll tell you why I do preffer it over Rev.C..

I have an iMac G5, 17", 2GHz - rev.B - 2GB RAM. wireless Mouse and KB and I do love it... silent... no dead pixels... no problem. But I'll tell you my concerns about the new models:

1. Now if you wanna go 17" you have to go back to 1.9GHz.

2. And also, you can't have paired RAM that would bring it to 128bits any more... (I have two 1GB RAM)

3.The 2GB RAM itself is SOOOO expensive... you can almost buy another computer...

4.The new iSight doesn't give you a chance of pointint it to another place in your room... I'd have to move the whole iMac if I wanted to show my mum (who lives in another country) my kids playing in the living room.

As I said I don't have any of the problems related to Rev A or B... I believe there might be many users just like me... with a quiet iMAC... and I use Photoshop, Flash, Dreamweaver, iPhoto, iMovie... Internet... all at the same time... It just works!!!

I have no need for Front Row... I am happy with my iMac being 2GHz and having 2GB RAM...

Give your oppinions...

Cheers!

Well, I don't think this is the case. Technology changes. If I was to keep waiting for the next great thing, or technology to slow down, I'd still be using my old Commodore.

I will say this about the August 2004 iMac G5 and the iMac G5 ALS. They are user serviceable. That is, I can take off the back and get at the guts of the machine. That is something thhat I can't do with the iSight model. And to me, it makes the new machine a little less desireable.

Honestly...

Not trying to reassure myself... having a quiet and zero dead pixels machine already makes me so happy...

As I said:

I couldn't afford the 20" because I needed 2GB Ram and Wireless KB and Mouse...

Anyway, I have AppleCare and if my iMAC has any problem... I wouldn't like getting a 1.9GHz 17" iMAC... (THAT"S MY POINT!!!, I don't want to go down!)

And also I wouldn't be able to keep my 2 GB Ram...

the 2GB Ram is over 1000 quid... far too expensive...

I was just trying to see what people think about the RAM and GHz specification... compare advantages... down side...

...not intending to start a "my Mac is better than yours" crap...

ok?

Mine is DEAD quiet, no dead pixels and blows the doors off of the REV A. I have 1.5 GB RAM, sufficent.

Well so it seems... Mac is the BEST.

ok?

Yes

I wouldn't go back to Windows...

I just get worried, in case my iMac has any problem... and it has to be replaced by a 1.9GHz...

and I will won't be able to use my 2GB RAM...

I paid for AppleCare, have a great computer and I don't want to spend extra money with RAM in case it needs to be replaced...

But iMac is a great computer, THE BEST I"VE HAD!

In the future I intend to go to Power Mac as I want to start doing 3D animation...

Well I got my daughter a 17-inch ALS Rev B iMac in June, 2 GHz processor, and it is a spectacular computer. However, I read in Macworld that the new 1.9 GHz iMacs are actually a bit faster than the Rev. B 2 GHz iMacs due to other improvements. So going "back" to 1.9 GHz here would actually be an improvement. Given what I have read about these newest iMacs, of course I would prefer one over the "older" one we got in June. But that's how it always is with computers, cars, etc. The newer ones are almost always nicer.

I agree that the older iMacs are more user servicable and the memory set up is more flexible (and maybe cheaper). But the matched pair RAM chips has turned out to be an almost invisible advantage, perhaps measurable in special tests, but not visible in real world situations, from what I have researched on this topic (I looked into this before we purchased our computer without a matched pair). And my daughter's Rev. B iMac came with 512 Meg, we simply added 1 Gig for a total of 1.5 Gig RAM. We will probably never open the computer and will probably use it like this for its entire life. I would bet it would be the same if we had bought a newest iMac, and I'm guessing that most iMac users are like us. Tinkerers and customizers almost always get a PowerMac which have true expansion capabilities. But for the majority of home users who do stuff like email, web browsing, games, MS Office, graphics, iPhoto, iTunes, Adobe Photoshop and the like, the imac is great and the newest ones probably are a shade faster and nicer (and I would guess a bit more reliable since Apple has probably learned some lessons in that area as well).

Gonna have to agree, that it sounds as if the poster is trying to reassure himself so he feels better about not having the faster, better machine.

As for the 100 mhz your are concerned about loosing and the paired ram. Look into what the new ram is. Its better ram, its far faster than the ram you have "paired" in your older machine. So the 1.9 G5 with the ddr2 ram is already faster by quite a bit.

Example, I had the 20" rev A 2.0 with 2gb of the DDr400. This new model has 2.1 G% and is only running 1gb of DDR X 2 ram and it runs MUCH faqster even with half the ram. So comparing Rev B and Rev C is kinda like comparing apples to oranges.

Also where the iSight is concerned, whats in your room that you need to turn the camera to see? You can move the iSight you know. Just swivel the machine or angle it up or down, but the point of an iSight is to use it for web conferncing. Not to show whats beside you. A video camera would be what you want if you want to move it around and show different things in your room. But webcams are made for web use meaning its supposed to look at you.

I personally know people with Rev A and B machines who are happy. But saying that the Rev C model is less a machine than the B sounds alot like other poeple have said, sounds like you wish you had it and are trying to convince yourself its ok. (Which it should be. ) But if you want a Rev C go get it. If you cant afford it atm, wait til you can. They really are amazing machines!!!! everything inside them is new, and I think Apple really learned some hard lessons with the older G5s with heat mainly.

I say ENJOY WHAT YOU HAVE, no matter what it is.

Dec 5, 2005 12:45 PM in response to Chris CA

Chris C asks, "Why is it better?"

1.) It has its entire insides redone. ( To adress the heat issues that were burning them out so fast.)

2.) Faster ram. DDR2 ram is amazing, very fast!

3.) Included iSight camera!

4.) Thinner case with a slightly curved back.

5.) Runs very cool.

6.) Double the video ram. Graphics are aweosme on this new double rate chip. The ATI Radeon X600 XT with 128gb is an awesome chip.

7.) Brighter screens, with a higher resolution.

8.) Remote control included for listening to music. ( Front Row.)

9.) Front Row, an amzing little app that lets u access all your digital stuff.

10.) Includes the new mouse, Mighty Mouse.

11.) Includes Blutooth.

12.) Includes Airport card built in.

13.) Double the base ram.

14.) Almost 100gb more standard hard drive included.

15.) Tiger OS included instead of the rev A Panther.

16.) Double layer DVD burning instead of Rev As single layer.

17.) Faster processor, frontside bus, and bigger max memory at 2.5 gb insteda of 2 gb.

I mean this rev C has alot over the rev A and Bs if your asking whats changed. Its alot!

Dec 5, 2005 2:33 PM in response to Macsastic

I have to agree that the Rev. C is better but cheer up all you Rev. A and Rev. B owners. You have had months of an iMac computing experience and that is 'priceless'. Plus- the great thing about computers is that time is always on your side (or against you- depending upon your perspective). In no time at all the marginal improvement of a Rev. C will seem like nothing. When your extended applecare runs out in two years time- you will be able to purchase an intel iMac that will blow the doors off of all three revisions!

I have a 20" Rev. B machine with 2 gb of RAM. I have had no major problems with my machine at all. I like the stand-alone iSight camera on top of my machine. My machine makes a very low sound, but not enough to give myself a nervous breakdown over it. Front Row doesn't want to make me trade in machines. If the new iMac had a TV tuner inside I would consider changing.
