Hi everyone,

Does anyone know if it is possible to get the iphone 4 to make Facetime calls to other iphone 4's using their email address instead of the telephone #?

I have tried it, from phone a to b, and from b to a, and neither works. One of the iphone 4's I tried it with has push email, the other doesnt.

I tried turning Facetime on and off again to get it reactivated, but that didnt solve this.

I am using iOS 4.1.

I havent looked at the user guide for the new ipod touch but apparently to use Facetime on the new ipod touch you need to register your email address to your device....but I cant figure out how this is possible on the iphone 4.

It would be nice to be able to use Facetime from my house to another phone, when I dont get a cell signal here at home regularly....so if I could get it to work with email addresses like on the ipod touch, then I would be able to use Facetime here even when I didnt have a signal (but I have wifi).

Thanks in advance for your help.

FaceTime video calls work via a wi-fi connection only between two iPhone 4's, or between an iPhone 4 and the new iPod Touch when both are connected via an available wi-fi network, or between two of the new iPod Touches when both are connected to the Internet via an available wi-fi network.

With the iPhone 4, the cell phone number is registered with Apple's FaceTime server. With the new iPod Touch, it will be with an email address.

    Thanks for replying.

The reason why I asked this question is because after upgrading to 4.1 today, I noticed when clicking the FaceTime button in contacts that it let's you choose between making the call with the contacts phone number, or the contacts email address. But like I said connecting with the phone# worked, but connecting with the email address didn't.

So I didn't know if this was an oversite on Apples part or if they will eventually allow FaceTime devices to call iPhone 4s using an email address.

To use FaceTime to an email address, that email address may have to be the one used for the iTunes account that the other iPhone was activated with. There has to be some way for FaceTime to connect an email address to a particular iPhone.

Have you been able to connect to an iPhone 4 successfully using it's email address?

On both phones I tried, the email addresses I used were the same ones linked to their Apple ID but it still wouldn't work.....

I've been looking for the solution too....
I am using iphone 4 and my sister is also using iphone 4 but the problem is... she is living in the other side of the world .... that is why it will be better for me if I can do facetime via email.

Hi - unfortunately I still haven't figured out how to get this to work (if it is even possible with the iPhone 4), but I will post a solution on this thread if I ever find one....

I had this same topic in the facetime thread. I was told it only works with iphone 4 to ipod touch and ipod touch to ipod touch. Think about it, all iphone 4 users 'should' have a phone number, so why give them an option to use facetime with email? iPod touch owners can't have a phone number to facetime with email is the only option. Maybe a jailbreak or future ios release will fix it. Hope this helps cause I am in the same boat as everyone else!
