why can't i delete files using the delete button on the keyboard

using the delete button on the keyboard would be much faster than using the delete icon in the system window

Macbook Pro 17 i7 5400 RPM, iPhone 4 32GB, Time Capsule 1TB, Mac OS X (10.6.4), 500GB 7200 RPM seagate external drive

It's command(Apple key)-delete(backspace).

And Command-Shift-Delete to empty the trash.

If you check out the Finder Menu Entries, the keyboard short-cuts are listed on the right of any menu item that has a short-cut.

You can also use Finder -> Help
