Movie formats for iTunes

What movie formats does iTunes play? I have a collection of short home movies from a camcorder. They are currently in avi format. I'm interested in buying the Apple TV so I can stream home movies from iTunes to my TV upstairs. Will it play almost any format, or do I need to convert everything to Quicktime? Or some version of an mpeg?

i believe if you install Perian, QuickTime will be able to export .avi files to an iTunes/Apple TV friendly format.

alternatively, you could use HandBrake to convert those files. the app comes with pre-sets for e.g. Apple TV and iPod.

go [ here|http://www.apple.com/appletv/specs.html] for information on video formats Apple TV supports. not all that plays in iTunes will play on Apple TV.
