Error during iTunes 10 installation - iPod Service failed to start

Hi Everyone,
I am getting this error during installation of iTunes 10(Windows XP).
+*"Service (iPod Service)failed to start.Verify that you have sufficient priveleges to start system services."*+

*Can any of you please help?* I ignored it first and continued with the installation. Then tried to update iphone to iOS 4.1 which crashed. I had to go to Apple store to get my iphone restored. I am having trouble installing itunes and cannot restore data from backup.

I tried uninstalling itunes and deleted all itunes data as suggested by the guy at the Apple store. Still not working. 😟 Will appreciate if someone can help resolve this error. Thanks. 🙂

Sorry no solution but I have the exact same symptoms after clicking OK to installing iTunes 10 when prompted from inside iTunes.

I have tried the total removal and re-installed of all Apple software as instructed on the Apple support site. However, the same error occurs when the install tries to start the 'iPod Service' service at the end of the installation.

Maybe the is a issue with the iTune 10 install?

I have been doing some more digging.

It seems there is a problem with iTunes 10 for Apple to fix as I am seeing the same issue all over.

I have gone back to iTunes 9.2.1.4 until Apple provide the fix and iPhone sync is working again.

To go back follow "pcoats" advice on the following apple dicussion:

Worked for me. Thanks "pcoats"!

I am suffering exactly the same problem.

I have a message pop up that an unhandled Win32 exception occurred in iPodService.exe

It wasnt a problem before but now my Nano has arrived it is a big problem.
the documentation for the nano states it needs Itunes 10.. so not sure that going back to ITunes 9 will help but will give it a try.

Hopefully Apple are monitoring this and will do something quick else me new new nano is but a useless pile of electronic gadgetry that looks good and plays the radio. 😟

Hi friends, I'm Paulo from Brazil.

I've had the same problem during itunes installation and now I cannot use my brand new ipod Shuffle recently brought in the US. Maybe the suggestion to downgrade the application version can be recomended.

If anyone wants a copy of the version 9 IPodservice bin folder to replace the version 10 one after installation ( mine works with no messing about with registry keys etc ) then let me know can email it for you..

it literally is as simple as copying the Version 9 "C:\Program Files\iPod\bin" folder, install v10 itunes and rename the newly installed bin folder to something else ( i used "bin_10" ) and pasted the V9 folder back in.
Restarted Itunes and off it went.

I just got off the phone with Apple tech support. The problem with that iPod Service is a problem with XP Service Pack 3, but can be fixed this way:

1. Right click on "My Computer", select "Properties"
2. Click on the Advanced tab.
3. in the Startup and Recovery section, click the Settings button.
4. Click the Edit byutton to edit your boot.ini file in notepad.
5. Look for "/noexecute=" in the file and change the word after the equals to "optin" (sorry - I don't remember what the original setting was anymore).
6. Save the file, close notepad, click the OK button on Startup and Recovery window, then reboot.

The warning message about the iPod Service should stop. Also, this helps with iPhones that are not recognized by Windows or iTunes after an install fails.
