iPhone 4 firmware update failure.

Hello all.

I have tried to update my iPhone 4 (32G, 4.0.2 firmware)to the latest firmware (4.1) but I continue to get this message:

"The software for the iPhone "Stuart" was corrupted during download.

Disconnect and reconnect, then try again. Make sure your network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later."

I have tried what it says, but that does not seem to help. I have also "repaired" (after the second time it failed) iTunes, Apple Application Support, Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Software Update but this hasn't helped either.

Any replies/ help would be much appreciated, thank you.

I am using Windows XP, and iTunes 10.

Why would I want to disable my firewall/ anti-virus software? It has never hindered my firmware download before but I will try it nonetheless - thank you.

I will then try updating using the restore method mentioned above by ShadyMac - thank you.

I will post back later with the results, as it takes awhile to download the firmware seen as it is quite large.

Since a firmware update is a large download and includes an installer, it can make certain antivirus software that is required with Windows run in circles and get overloaded preventing the download from completing or corrupting the download. Temporarily disabling the antivirus software being uses before beginning the download can resolve this.

Hey Stuart,

I had the same experience late last night and the phone was stuck in recovery mode.

The install of the 4.1 update crashed 3 times and thats when the phone got stuck in recov mode. I ended up fixing it by downloading an app called 'RecBoot' (google it) and that got the phone out of recovery mode and allowed me to reconnect to iTunes and restore the phone.

After the phone was restore - it showed that it was actually upgraded to 4.1 from 4.0.2

Give this a go and let me know how you go as well.

I phoned up Apple because I have the two year AppleCare cover, so I'm getting a new iPhone 4 sent out and I have to give them my broken one back so I cannot try your method.

I think your method may have worked, but I cannot say for sure obviously because, well, I have to send my iPhone back now.

I'm sure some of these posts will come in handy to others, even though my problem has not been solved.

I would also like to note that I tried downloading the firmware with a wired connection (on my 5th attempt) and that didn't work.

Thank you to everyone that posted, it is much appreciated even though my issue hasn't been resolved.
