Splitting audio into left and right channels

Hi,

I was wondering if anyone knew how to split a stereo file into its left and right parts?, so that i have the audio of the left on one channel and the audio of the right side on another channel.

Many thanks for any help and advice,

Best,

Tom

Hi,
you can use the copy/convert function in the Audio Bin and select split stereo in the format menue. Then before importing the newly created split stereo file prepare two stereo tracks as follows:
Long click on the interleaved stereo icon at the bottom of the channel strip->menue opens->select "Left" and "Right" (which turns those stereo tracks into mono channels playing either side of the file) -> then drag the split stereo file from the Bin to those tracks. You can now pan each side as it was a mono channel. There is also the possibility to unlink the split stereo files in the Bin so that you eventually have two independent mono channels.

Hi,

Thanks for your reply, i've done that, now how do i invert the phase on one of the tracks?

My goal is to try and extract an acapella from the original stereo file you see, and i was told this is a good way to try - get the left and right parts of the original stereo track seperate, then have them 2 new audio files on 2 new tracks and invert the phase of one of the channels and it should result in anything that is left in the centre.

Thank you for your help, i really appreciate it.

I looked through the manual quickly and couldn't find it there to link to.

In the Bin, you can select:
- Audio File -> Copy/Convert File(s) -> Then from the "Stereo Conversion" drop down item select "Interleaved to Split"

A new set of files (Mono L, Mono R) are created.

Further modification, to use each channel independently can be done by selecting "Edit" -> "Disconnect Select Split Stereo File"

Alternatively, to simply access each channel of a stereo file without doing the above, you can copy the stereo file to two tracks on the arrange window. Then in the mixer you can select either the left or right channels to play using the (Input) Format button for each track.

Was too slow! *shakes fist*

For inverting phase you can use the "Gain" utility plugin. Will work the same in the second case I outlined above as well.
