iphone 4 camera freeze/crash - FIX

Hi everyone

I just bought an iphone 4 32gb last night. Right away when I tried to use the camera, it would freeze once the shutter opened, and then restart.

I tried restoring it, updating firmware from 4.0 to 4.1, a hard reset and also leaving the power off for 20minutes. All of these didn't work.

I thought it might be a software problem, so I downloaded a third party camera app. It was the Super Camera: free version.

Lo and behold it worked!!! So then I tried using the default camera application and it worked, too! Now I am all up and running. I downloaded a video camera, too and that worked. Forgot which app, though.

I have literally just done this, so I will test it out for a few days and report back.

Maybe it will work for the others?

I'm having the same problem. As soon as I start the camera app the phone reboots. This is really annoying since it was the new camera that made me buy the iPhone 4. I have tried hard resets, restoring the phone, shutting it down for hours and installing super camera and nothing works. Maybe I have to return the phone which ***** as I have waited for weeks.

I have the rear facing camera freezing 1-2 sec after app launching. Downloading free Super-Camera didn't help - the camera freezes then reboots the phone on that app as well. After that, when launching iphone camera app it opens front facing camera which works normally. I switch to rear facing camera, and it freezes again & reboots. Subsequent relaunches present front facing camera working fine (video too) but any attempt to use rear camera crashes the phone

I have the same problem.
It occurred first time on my iPhone when I switched over to take a video. Before I took some pictures which worked fine.

Did you all switched to video as well?

Today I called the Apple Support Hotline. They suggested me to completely reinstall everything - without using my backup. Good idea - would take me a whole day - at least. No fun. No.

Hey, Apple - please help!

I had that issue too, tho I can't say that was the when the problem started. I too did a restore as a new phone (it doesn't take that long, you'll just not have your other apps loaded) but it was of no help. So I went back & restored from a backup until my appointment with the genius bar, and he gave me a new phone. Boxed up mine & said "they'll want to take a look at this one" 🙂

Try this: Cover the rear camera with your finger, then launch the camera app. Mine didn't crash when I did this, and it allowed me to switch back to camera mode. I was able to snap some photos (finger still over the lens) and it would take photos (I could tell because the flash would fire, thinking it was a night time shot). I could also turn on/off the flash, the HDR, and get into the photo camera roll. However when removing my finger from the lens (still in camera mode) the app would freeze in less than a second. Definitely think its time for a new phone.

Hi Richard,
New phone will not help. Mine is a brand new iPhone 4. It seems to be a problem of iOS4 or iOS4.1.

I was able to do the same you did - put the finger on the camera: no crash. Remove the finger: crash.

It seems to be a problem of the focus function. If you put your finger on the camera ("night") focus square doesn't appear. When it appears for some time (it is flickering): the iOS crashes.

Time for Apple to provide a fix for that.
