"Safari can't save the file" - downloading all jpeg images??

I just bought a used dual PowerPC G5 using OS 10.5.8. I downloaded Safari 5.0.2. Now whenever I go to download and save any image from a website, I get the message "Safari can't save the file. Safari can't save the file 'xyz' to the downloads folder."
How can I enable the system to download and save images on to my hard drive?
Thanks.

PowerPC G5, Mac OS X (10.5.8), Safari 5.0.2

Hi Chris,

Open a Finder window. Select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left.

Now open the Library folder then the Safari folder.

Move the "Downloads.plist" file to the Trash.

Restart the G5.

If that didn't make a difference, empty the Safari cache either from the Safari menu bar, Safari / Empty cache or Command + Option + E on your keyboard.

Thanks for your response.

I trashed "Downloads.plist," and restarted the computer. It still is unable to download and save images (jpeg) from the internet. Then I checked Library > Safari, and now there is no "Downloads.plist" in the Safari folder???

So I then emptied the Safari cache. But then, I am still unable to download photos, images from the internet.

Any other suggestions would be very helpful for me as this is a problem.

Thanks,

Chris

Additional Discovery/Problem:

Using the internet on Safari, when I tried to save the image using "Save Image As," I received this message:

<< The document “abc.jpg” could not be exported as “abc”. You do not have appropriate access privileges.

To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info. >>

Under Systems Preferences > Accounts, I am listed under "My Account" as the Admin. There are no other Accounts enabled. If I am the Systems Administer and User together, how could I not have access privileges?

How can I change this so I can readily use "Save Image As" function for downloading and saving images in a specified folder?

Thanks,

Chris

Ok Chris...

As far as the "safe file" ... do you have any Safari Extensions installed?

When you purchased this Mac, did you get the original install disc(s) ?? so you can check the startup disk for errors?

Chances are you migrated a file that could be causing at least part of the problems... http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=12261846#12261846

I see you didn't respond there.....

Hi Chris,

Yes but make certain it will work on Leopard.

Also, you can get replacement System Install & Restore CD/DVDs from Apple's Customer Support - in the US, (800) 767-2775 - for a nominal S&H fee. You'll need to have the model and/or serial number of your Mac available.

How can I check to see if I have any Safari Extensions?

From the Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Extensions tab.

Try repairing permissions with the Disk Utility app (Applications/Utilities)

Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

I did the Disk Repair in Utilities. Restarted. But still not able to save and download images, either under "Save to Downloads" or "Save Image As."

There still was no History.plist in the Home > Library > Safari folder. So I went to Apple and downloaded and installed a new Safari. That created a History.plist. Went I then went to an internet image and was able to save it to "Save to Downloads."

But when I tried to "Save Image As," I received the same message as always before:
The document “abc.jpg” could not be exported as “abc”. You do not have appropriate access privileges.
To view or change access privileges, select the item in Finder and choose File > Get Info.

I am the Administrator. There is no User. So I would think that I would have "appropriate access privileges."

In the transfer of all my documents in Migration Assistance, most of my Word documents arrived with "Read Only" access.

Any suggestions how to "change access privileges so that I have "appropriate access privileges to save items in folders or locations of my choosing?

I have not tried Disk Warrior. Disk Warrior worked on my previous G4 using OS 10.4. How would I determine if Disk Warrior will work with OS 10.5.8. I assume it would. Should I try it for this latest snafu?

Thanks for hanging in there with me.

Everything seems to be working now.

I ran DiskWarrior (the updated version for OS 10.5.8). It had six pages of repairs. Then I manually changed the disk permissions of each of my folders, and the User Folder, to enable Administrator to "Read & Write." (Most of the folders were "Read Only."

That seemed to do it. Thank you for your timely assistance.
