Backlit keyboard

When watching a video podcast on my MacBook Pro, either in the iTunes window or in full screen mode and the keyboard illumination is turned on, because of low ambient light, it just will not turn off after the specified period of time which is set in System Preferences. During the whole video, the keyboard is illuminated. Is this the way it should work? Or am I missing something?

Which preference are you referring to?

Were it me, I'd just turn it off. In fact that's what I have done, because it just doesn't work on my powerbook. The display casts light on the keyboard rendering the backlight ineffective.

I was referring to the keyboard preferences. But you are right, there is an option to turn the backlight completely off, which I missed.
Nevertheless this is annoying to me because the option I have mentioned before seems to be ignored.
By the way when watching a video on YouTube the same thing happens. The keyboard backlight will not turn off.
