I returned my 6th Gen. today because it does not have a one-click pause/sleep function.

I also sent Apple feedback as to why I returned my new Nano at http://www.apple.com/feedback

This is why we are becoming an overweight nation. Two clicks is really that much harder than one click?

Use your money to buy a Classic, it still has one click.

Nope. Crappy design. From the user's manual:

*Note: iPod nano continues to use battery power after it’s been turned off.*
The iPod nano battery is 80-percent charged in about one and a half hours, and fully
charged in about three hours. If you charge iPod nano while adding files, playing
music, listening to the radio, or viewing a slideshow, it might take longer.

I had this problem. What you can do is press the volume controls plus and minus at the same time with the wake/sleep button. Do this for roughly ten seconds then you will see a silver apple on your screen and a list menu starting with the word standby. Press the wake/sleep button one more time. The screen should be black. The nano is turned off. To turn it back on click the wake/sleep button.

Says the exact same thing in the iPod Nano 4th Generation manual (look it up). So all those were also bad designs? You prefer resetting the date and time each time you turn it on?

It is not turned off at this point. Read the quote from the manual above.

So, I have read this thread along with several others, talked to Applecare, the Genius Bar, and the Nano 6 gen manual online. Is the way the kid explained on YouTube the "right" way to turn the Nano off or put it to sleep? I would like to know in a clear way what is the way to put the Nano to sleep, since it really can't be turned off and still have the clock work and not have to reset everything that got turned off when the Nano was turned off. It also puts some settings back to default so turning it off does not seem like the right way to do this if I use it at least every other day. I put the music on pause, make sure the pedometer is off, turn the volume all the way down until no sound bars are coming out of the speaker on the display and I take out the earphones and push the Sleep/Wake button. For me I still use a considerable amount of battery power when I do this but I think Apple is way off when they ay you can get 24 hours of play back from a full charge.

I am eager to get this settled so I can decide if I should return it or not.

I can only tell you what I do: if you have been playing the radio turn it off, then push the sleep button, if playing the iPod press pause the the sleep button. I also remove the headphones. I have negligible battery use the next morning.

I love the new Nano but it does not shut off. Removing the headphones just means you can't hear it play. It doesn't quit at all until the battery runs down. Which is NOT the 36 hours advertised in the manual. I have some doubts that a software upgrade will fix this issue. I suspicion that it will have to be a re-design. Mine is going back. Like so many relationships, it only lasts until you find out the truth.

I agree...you can turn off the 6th gen Nano by holding all 3 buttons for at least 8-10 seconds. You can leave your headphones in, etc. I haven't had a chance to test the batterly life via this method. It would be most helpful if Apple would take it upon themselves to re-write the manual and post that the manual has been updated. They are losing sales due to this oversight so it is in their own best interest.

What you are doing with that routine is putting it into deep sleep mode. You get the same thing when you pause it and put it to sleep and then leave it alone for 12 hours. After that time when you press the sleep button the Apple Logo will appear and it will boot up.

Even when it is is deep sleep mode it will still use the battery. Try leaving it that way for a month. It has to use some power to maintain the clock.
