    It turns completely off.

    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4531

The 1st 5 minutes after being turned completely off, the nano keeps now playing in memory. After that, it is "Totally off", you will see an apple logo upon restarting.

    read the kb above!

I downloaded this update last night, now everytime the screen goes black (ie. if I haven't pressed anything in about 30 seconds), the song I am listening to gets paused. Just went into the shop but they had no real advice but to reset my ipod.

Any advice before I have to wipe the whole thing

So did they reset it for you at the store? Resetting it won't effect any of the content you have on your nano. If so - Did it fix the problem?

Restoring to factory settings will wipe your nano - but then you can reload your content again...that will not take a lot of time.

    You might find this useful:

    Good luck.

No they never, she'd offered to put it back to its factory settings but I prefered to keep hold of the music until I got back home. So still have the problem. Going to try and run the battery down and hope that solves the problem. If not will see if restoring factory settings does.

Please note that "Resetting" is not the same thing as "Restoring" to factory settings. "Resetting" WILL NOT effect the content that is on your nano. Try a "Reset" per the instructions in my earlier post and see if that corrects your problem.

I had done that, yes. I had tried resetting a few times to see if any of the settings had changed. This had no effect. Was still pausing the song when the screen went black. Restoring factory settings did not help either.

Took ipod into Newcastle store today and they replaced it as they couldn't fix it either. They hoped it may be a problem with the individual ipod as opposed to a glitch being introduced by the update. But it had been working fine for the few weeks before the update.

no it cannot be completely shut off(really stupid) but to help conserve battery make sure your music is paused and Not playing- It'll drain your battery

So what happens when you hold the sleep button down for 2 seconds on yours? This is assuming you have updated your firmware to version 1.1.

I think the last two words reflects upon the user, not Apple. After updating to 1.1, the Nano turns off completely. Marvelous.

    Short answer is YES.

To turn the Nano (6G) off completely, get the 1.1 firmware update (click on your iPod tab on the left side of itunes while the 6G is plugged in, and update from there).

After that it is simply a case of holding the Sleep/Wake button until it shuts off.

The currently playing music will be held in RAM for 5 minutes, but after that the iPod will completely shut down and upon holding the button again to turn it on, the apple logo will be displayed as the iPod starts up.

    Hope this helps,

    Jeddicus

Mine seemed to lose power after I switched it off, I discovered that it was turning itself back on and thats why the battery died.  The Sleep / wake button has now developed the problem where it is stuck in the down position.  I am going to go to my nearest apple store and see if they will replace it under the warranty.

I have had a lot of Ipods and this is the 1st one that has given me problems.
