Best iPhone Car Kit

I'd like to get some suggestions on the best gizmo to securely hold my iPhone in position to be used with a navigation app in my car. I hear the TomTom car kit doesn't work with a USB-based iPod-controllable radio, so cross that one off the list.

Thanks in advance.

www.proclipusa.com should be able to help. If you have a case on your phone they offer adjustable cradles with and without passthrough dock connectors so you can permanently attach the cable of your choice to the bottom of the cradle and just slip the phone in and out instantly. Their stuff is kind of pricey but very well made. They also offer custom mounting solutions for the cradles for just about any vehicle.

I'm using their adjustable cradle with the pass-through dock connector and it's working perfectly for my iPhone 4. I have a cable attached to the dock that charges via USB (from lighter socket) and has an audio connection to the aux input on my car stereo. Blueant S4 visor hands-free via bluetooth completes the setup and the Blueant can also play your turn-by-turn commands from the GPS software. Cheers!

I'm using a custom universal mount from Panavise for my 08' Rav4 that mounts up beside the radio. It works really well for me with the ProClip cradle and is just off to the side of the vent. This actually works really great as I can direct cold air on it in the summer when I'm running my GPS software and streaming music... no overheating issues. In the winter it hasn't been an issue either but I can also move the vent blades to redirect the airflow away from the iPhone. Hasn't been required so far to redirect the heat though but again, mine isn't directly covering the vent.

We did a road trip this summer with my wife's new car so I had a temporary windshield mount for my iPhone4 in her car and the phone overheated and shutdown several times during the days. Yikes! That's when I realized how the vent airflow was actually helping the situation in my car.

I'm using the cradle with the pass-through connector which so far is awesome as it allows you to leave any dock style cable you choose attached permanently to the cradle. The phone then snaps in and out of the cradle instantly with no cable hassles. I'm using the Apple component video cable which allows for USB charging via a cigarette lighter adaptor and has RCA audio out jacks which I converted to mini-din with a cheap adaptor for the aux-in on my care stereo. Everything is working fantastic and I'm very happy with the setup. In hindsight, I found out you can get a MUCH cheaper cable on ebay that effectively does the same thing for like $5 bucks instead of the $50 I paid for the Apple cable but oh well. It's all installed and nicely hidden away so I'm stuck with it now. Cheers!

Nope as I already have the cradle from ProClip which is mounted to this bracket from Panavise in my case:

It's a universal mount plate so the ProClip cradle attaches perfectly. I decided I liked the positioning in my Rav4 better with the Panavise mount instead of the ProClip mounts available but unfortunately, Panavise doesn't have as extensive a range of mounts as ProClip so it might be a little trickier finding one for your car. ProClip on the other hand seem to have a custom mount for just about any car so that's a big help.

As previously mentioned, the ProClip stuff is pricey but it's really well made and no regrets on my part as I seriously wanted a passthrough connector and was thrilled that I found somebody that makes such a beast. Cheers!

P.S. I think Brodit is the original manufacturer of the ProClip stuff so you can search under that name as well. That's the name they use in Europe and I believe the company is from Sweden originally.

This is the holder I'm using for my iPhone 4 which is also in a CaseMate "Barely There" case. Fits perfectly and they make a similar cradle for the iPhone 3GS if you have that. Please note that if you have an iPhone 4 with a bumper case, this will not work. They make two different cradles to handle the bumper case but unfortunately not a cradle with a pass-through connector. If you or anyone needs the pass-through then you'll have to change the case from the bumper to something else.

This is the case I use for my iPhone 4 (fits the ProClip cradle perfectly) and they make a similar case for the 3GS. They have personal reviews on their site as well, seems like most folks are pretty happy with the case. I got mine at BB in Canada.

Seidio in the U.S. also makes a great case and holster combo for iPhones and they have a matching car cradle but no pass-through, just an included charging cable. I had Seidio on my 3GS and quite liked it and their snap in belt holster is terrific. Also very well made stuff.
