Is something wrong with my iphone battery? Strange charing problem

Every night I plug my phone in to charge while I sleep. When I wake up in the morning, my phone is charged to 90 something percent, and has the "plugged in" icon to indicate that its running on AC power.

What gives?

For example, this morning it was showing "97% battery remaining" even though it had the icon.

I unplugged it, immediately replugged it, and it began to charge again. In less than an hour, it was at 100% and had the plug icon again.

Whats the deal?

iPhone 4, iOS 4

This has nothing to do with my iphone 4 as I don't have this problem but my previous iphone 3G S purchased from AT&T online had this problem. When charging, it would charge overnight, good sign. Now when I wake up, sometimes when I unplug it it reads 98% or 99% which i thought it was odd, and to find it a bit of annoying to it. But am not sure if it's a defect. I have it to my sister, and i plan on making a trip down to her place on thanksgiving weekend so probably on Black friday, I'll set up an appointment for her iphone 3G S and see if we can replace the battery, and yes it is still under warranty as I purchased it in January.
